Evernote competitors?
Posted by davegb on November 25th, 2006

I discovered Evenote in this NG a few days ago. I installed it on my
computer at work where I have a lot of short text stuff I need quick
access to and hadn't found a good way to handle it. Evernote seems to
handle that kind of thing very well and make it easy to find later.

I came home and installed it here this weekend. Then I put in my
"collection" of quotes I like and all the recipes that I had already on
my computer it Word files. Evernote seems to work great for this. So
far, I'm impressed. I also like it's short todo lists for around the
house kind of things I do.

So far, the only thing I don't like is that it says I can store images,
but won't accept them when I drag them to a note. If anyone knows what
the "trick" is, I'd love to hear it. But that's not as important to me
as the text stuff and todo lists. O yes, they won't let me join their
support forum to ask these kinds of questions there. I haven't figured
out why.

Before I spend much more time loading stuff into Evernote (already have
a few hours in), I'd like to know what it's competitors are. I googled
this group, and looked at Treepad, which I don't care for, and Keynote,
which didn't have any information on, just a download. So, before I go
futher with Evernote and start putting in all kinds of other stuff, are
there any other similar programs that others think are worth a
look-see?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the tip. I'm off to try Evernote. I seem to go in phases with
Treepad. I try it, like it, but then give up on it as a load of old
hooey. I'm currently back to liking it, and use it as simple personal
infomation management system. It is quite lightweight, so I'm quite fond
of it ... this month, at any rate.

I was wondering, I seem to recall that Susan Burgher was quite keen on
Treepad. If she keeps the Pricelessware program info in it, then that
file would be something useful to download. Nudge nudge.

Storing images is possible in EverNote... Simply open EverrNote and
your choice of Windows Explorer windows, click on a file and drag and
drop into the New Note area at the bottom (or into an existing note if
you wish). If the graphics you want to save are on a website simply
highlight and then right click and select Add to EverNote (works with
both IE 6, 7 and FireFox 1.5x and 2.0)

Registering for the forums... I found that the confirmation image that
you have to type is CASE sensitive. Also your registtation will not
become active till you follow the link that will be e-mailed to you.

Hope this helps, as I have found EverNote to be fairly usefull.

I was the one who first mentioned evernote on this newsgroup.

I wanted to share this information that I found useful with other people
who would benefit from my discovery.

Have in mind that there is also a firefox add-on extension that
works with firefox too so you can right click and add clips.
And it adds a toolbar icon so you can just click that and it does a whole
page. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1926/

On IE it works with the add on that is installed automatically when you
install the app.

I have been using it daily since I first installed it....

I needed a fast way to store clips or whole web pages in a searchable
database...
and that gave me the function I needed.

Nice, thanks for that. I just recently discovered WikidPad, which works
on the same principle (e.g. a personal wiki notepad style application)

"WikidPad is a wiki-like notebook for storing your thoughts, ideas,
todo lists, contacts, or anything else you can think of to write down.
What makes WikidPad different from other notepad applications is the
ease with which you can cross-link your information. Links in a wiki
are created by typing in WikiWords. A WikiWord is any case word (also
called CamelCase) typed into the editor. TodoList or JohnDoe are
example WikiWords. The term wiki means "quick" in Hawaiian, and wikis
are all about quickly linking your information together. Wikis are not
a new concept, in fact there are many web based wiki servers available."

One thing to consider is what would happen if Evernote disappeared -- went
commercial only or the company went under (a la Sidekick)? How easy would it
be to extract and convert your info? That's the reason I tend to shy away
from many of the PIMs recommended here -- many of them are produced by small
"mom and pop" operations who could disappear tomorrow (a la Keynote, an
otherwise fine program).

As much as possible I try to stick to using plain text or possibly html as
these formats are "universal", easily transportable between PCs, etc.
Reluctantly I will sometimes use MS DOC format or PDF as these these are so
popular that they aren't likely to disappear anytime soon.

Although I don't use Treepad Lite now I did for the longest time because I
liked its plain text format. I even posted a technique here for "marrying
it" with Irfanview if you wanted to include images or graphics with your
article, making it a nice html alternative. An alternative to Treepad, would
be any sophisticated text editor with some sort of macro and / or
programmable ability. I use Notetab Pro (the Lite version is almost as
capable and is free). Combine this with a good search program capable of
Boolean searches and you're protected against changing or disappearing
formats.

For web articles, I use the Firefox Scrapbook extension which of course uses
HTML and even includes some editing capability.

I love Treepad but. . .

Why not just download/save the PL web pages? I use local links to keep
those pages portable. IMO the cross-referencing on the web pages is
better than anything I could achieve in Treepad - been there, tried that
several years ago (in '02 IIRC) along with one or two other people in
the group. . .

OTOH I do hope to have updated ACF program info files online fairly soon
- including the Treepad version.

Excellent points!
One of the first things that I've learned to investigate about any new
software is how I'll extract my data in the event that I hate the
program or, yes: if the vendor goes under.

Back in the days of DOS, one of the things that I appreciated about
SideKick was that it stored data (at least in its notepad) as plain
ASCII. It was a great program that was usually very well-behaved. I
always appreciate great design like this. Rare.

Susan Bugher wrote:
The problem, as I see it, is that each page lists a whole list of apps.
So if you do a search, you're doing a search on the whole page, thereby
throwing up a lot of false positives. If each app had its own node, then
searches would be restricted to those nodes.

Theoretically, one could even turn the Treepad file into webpages. Its
file format is sufficiently simple to allow that.

Exactly. However, I suggest renaming your image files with a unique
extension, reserved for just this use. Within Irfanview you can associate
this extension with Irfanview and turn off the option that prompts you to
rename files with incorrect extensions. That way, you can continue to
associate jpgs, bmpsm, whatever with your original program of choice and
reserve the special extensions for use strictly within Treepad.

B.t.w. You should configure your newsreader to automatically remove the
