- Format Write Protected Flash Drive
- Posted by John the WebTV Man on November 21st, 2007
Is there a freeware utility that will reformat a 1Gb Flash Drive that
was corrupted by "unsafe" removal? There is no Write-Protect switch to
access and all normal Format procedures result with a "Write Protected"
error message.

You could try the Panasonic utility, which should work with many flash
drives. You might need to use Unlocker first or do a reboot to make it
accessible. I find some desktop search programs and file
managers/browsers tend to lock devices and they need to be closed to
release the device before Windows will say it can be safely removed.

jgulow@webtv.net says...
There are a couple of worthy freeware thumbdrive reformatters, namely
those offered by Hewlett-Packard (which Google). The premise behind
"unsafe" removal is a technical one having to do with electrical
surges upon 'breaking' of a circuit. It happens rarely, but better
safe than sorry. Using the SysTray method of USB removal merely cuts
off the 5-volt supply to the chosen particular socket.

Uh, it's also to make sure that the device isn't still waiting for data to
be written to it.

Exactly; these little devices must consume all of a milliwatt so I
doubt surge is an issue, whereas unemptied write cache is, on my
system. It takes SyncBack about 10-20 seconds to finish writing before
I can safely unplug the USB flash drive, whereas I can unplug my USB
hard drive almost immediately.

I am using Fx 2.0.0.7, not planning to go to 3.0 at this point.
Were you using 3.0?

The HP USB formatting tool copies and works fine as a no-install.
BTW, change of subject, my XP machine does not search, an excellent
replacement I found is:

Harddisk Search & Stats is a very powerful text-Search Engine for your
harddisk. It enables you to conveniently search large numbers of
text/ascii-based files simultaneously. Harddisk Search & Stats is ideal
for those who are handling text files. snip
Henk wrote a really nice small noinstall search program, works in W98SE,
W2K and XP.

Thanks, Wally. Now using 2.0.0.9, find it was the NoScript extension that
caused the problem, need to watch that one.
09 is clever, the portable version imported the installed extensions from
my 07, that never happened before.
