gantt chart/project planning software sought
Posted by RogFree on April 27th, 2008

Hello

I need to design some kind of project timeline or Gantt chart to show how I
propose to arrange a series of works to follow on from one another. I have
failed to identify any freeware via Google that allows me to plan things and
then save the plan as ajpeg or image file of some form. Please can anyone
point me in the right direction for some Windows XP OS software?

Thanks

DDS

Well if you search for project management +freeware it brings up a whole
load.

Near the top

2nd or third page - this looks like it might be a good one
http://timios.net/Gantt/
needs .net so that rules me out.

Have to confess when I did that for real I used an old dos app to
calculate the critical path, earliest, latest dates then did a bar chart
by hand in a spread sheet or on (gasp) paper.

Should have said also:

whatever you use, why not print to a pdf using one of the many free pdf
printer drivers.

That's the problem: I was after a recommendation based on personal
experience really. I have tried the software from timios but unfortunately,
it is crippled - you can't actually save the project or export it.

Thanks - I will look through the list you mention at
http://www.freewarefiles.com/cat_8_1...anagement.html and try a
hit-or-miss approach unless someone can come up with a direct rcommendation.

I think the second one is linux, so being a linux user, the repository
brings up a couple of apps, one of which is available in windows. see:

http://winplanner.sourceforge.net/

it needs GTK+ installed first and points to the gimp page, what is
actually needed is the old gimp page which is here.

Thanks for the pointers Rich. I've d/l from ganttproject.biz and it's
working nicely - all I need to do now is dredge up very distant memories of
how to generate gantt/pert charts! I already had GTK on account of
installing The Gimp recently, so it all workedout rather handily.

Yes. I had another look at ganttproject.biz and I was wrong. It is a
java app and multiplatform. Works nicely on my linux machine and exports
the sample to a .jpg if required so suit you nicely. Looks relatively
simple, task properties are duration and predecessors so you should be up
and flying in no time.

GanttProject 2.0.6 is a maintenance release that integrates better with
Windows and MacOSX and fixes a couple of severe bugs and a few UI quirks.

charts etc. and used to use MSProject a lot though that is archaic now. We
are moving to Primavera next year...more of an industry standard and
integrates to one database system we are converting to rather than the
archaic multiple database system (no talkie to each other) the company is
using now. Extracting data points for Business Objects and trying to merge
reports from multiple databases is a PITA. Spreadsheets to formulate and
conditionally format with VLOOKUP and homemade macros are used just to
make sense of all the data and make comparatives...it is a pain.
