"Google Maps" WOW!! Has Google trumped "Google Earth"?!?!
Posted by dbrtemp1203@pacbell.net on August 26th, 2005

Awhile back, we were discussing "Google Earth" (
http://earth.google.com/ ), a very impressive beta from the good folks
at Google.

But of course, "Google Earth" requires software on the local machine.

Enter "Google Maps"!!

http://maps.google.com/

If you're in the US, simply type your zip code into the search box and
click "Search"; or, city and state abbreviations of this kind work
well:

berkeley, ca

You will be shown a fairly large map of the area. NOW, click the
SATELLITE button in the upper right corner. You should be shown a
satellite image of the same region!

FINALLY, click the HYBRID button. Major roads should be placed on the
satellite image!

Zoom from side to side and in or out using the arrows in the upper left
corner. More details should appear as you zoom in.

Should you suddenly wish to use this system as you would the Yellow
Pages (to find a business) for the region shown, click LOCAL SEARCH
above the search box, and enter the name of the business.

Nicely implemented! Obviously draws on the same image database as
http://earth.google.com/ , but it requires no special hardware on the
local machine.

(I just did a non-US search for "brussels, belgium", and I found that
the satellite image worked, but the map & hybrid did not. Hopefully,
Google will come up to speed on non-US maps soon. There is also a help
file that might disclose some secrets I don't know about international
searches. Simply click "Help" next to the "Search" button.)

@z14g2000cwz.googlegroups.com:

Google Earth has some features that Google Maps doesn't including 3D
buildings for many major cities as well as the ability to tilt your view.
Having said that I use Google Maps at home as Google Earth will not run on
my machine (Windows 98SE with an ancient video card).

Actually, I'm not paid at all, having contributed to this message board
on a number of occasions. I suppose I can see how one might think
otherwise though, since the post really doesn't point one toward any
freeware.

Even so, if anyone has tips on getting onto Google's payroll, I'd be
glad to hear them!! But I will not post spam to do so!!

Hi Conor:

It does seem to work pretty well for many UK cities.

I was able to zoom in on Wembley Stadium pretty effectively:

Thanks!

Conor: I tried to find Stonehenge, but so far, no luck.

If anyone is able to find it, you simply click "Link to this page" in
the upper right corner, and the full URL/web address will appear on the
URL line in your browser.

So far, I've been unable to find the Great Wall of China (supposedly
the one human-made thing that is distinguishable from outer space), or
the Great Pyramids near Cairo.

I did find this excellent image from downtown Beijing, presumably
T-Square:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=beijin...0222&t=k&hl=en

But one post above mentions that Google Earth (which requires free
software on the local machine) has some capabilities that Google Maps
does not. I suspect this is correct.

P.S. NASA does provide a nice view of the earth at night:

places but not others:-). The image for Townsville Australia is about 2
years old, buildings not really identifiable unless you know the place.
Mapping would presumably require access to regional cadastral databases,
conversion of associated grid to universal etc.

It's logical, paying someone to promote a free service! : )

All seriousness aside, I've used the Maps stuff for a while now and it's
amazing. No need for Streets and Trips now.

Hmm.. I wonder what the site uses to make the map appear? It must be
some configuration problem on my system.

Is anybody else having a problem making the site work in Firefox?

It could be...I know that I have to disable Proxomitron to get Google
maps...I'm sure that it is just some filter setting--perhaps something
to do with javascript. It can take some study to figger out exactly
what Prox is 'protecting' me against, but having it off for a few
minutes at Google doesn't bother me.

I suppose that some firewall config could interfere
also........Fortunately, mine is not a problem (Kerio).
