- HELP needed finding FREE Screen Capture
- Posted by Terry on April 25th, 2008
I need a FREE screen capture program that can capture scrolling
webpages.
I'm using a trial version of FASTSTONE CAPTURE that is great, but it's
not FREE.
Some webpages are larger then a full screen, so I need a software that
will capture the complete page and not just the screen from top to
bottom.

small, 100% free and non-install. user-definable webpage length:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/web_site_screenshot.html
"SiteShoter is a small utility that allows you to save a screenshot
of any Web page into a file. It automatically creates hidden window
of Internet Explorer, loads the desired Web page, and than save
the entire content of the Web page into an image file (.png, .jpg,
..tiff, .bmp or .gif).
You can use SiteShoter in user interface mode, or alternatively, you
can run SiteShoter in command-line mode without displaying any user
interface."

Terrible name for an app.

Indeed. I wondered if the author at Nirsoft made an error?
Still, it is a neat application and it has become my default webpage
capture tool. I run it via a simple command line.

Thanks guys but the version tracker didn't work. The olders versions
for FASTSTONE CAPTURE have all been updated to the latest version.
The SITE SHOOTER program is weird. It opens up and I'm suppose to type
the URL in of the page I want to capture. Then I START it and it runs
but nothing happens. It doesn't even ask me where I want to save the
page to.
That's a weird way of capturing a screen.

I've used this for years...I'm on WinXP so not sure if it's Vista-compatible

what I love is being able to create and use an easy-for-me-to-remember key
and have it available when crisis issues come up. I leave it running all
the time as it has a very small footprint.

It is. I used to use Webshot and URL2BMP before that.
But this Nirsoft tool is far better for me and I run it from inside
my filemanager in command line mode, although it has a GUI too.
And it's non-install.
Worth a try.....

Do you know about copy/paste?
If you don't tell the program what page you want to capture,
how is it supposed to know?
Finger trouble?
I've just run it through the GUI and it works just fine.
Did you miss the box called "Filename"?
That's where you enter the path\name of the file you want to save.
Nothing weird at all. Most other programs work in a similar way.
They are not browser plug-ins but stand-alone programs.

Okay, now I see what I have to do.
It doesn't say so, but you have to put the path where you want it to
save into the FILENAME location.
Then you also have to check the box that says AUTOMATIC EXTEND BROWSER
SIZE . . . .
Now it's working perfectly.
It just captured a seven page scroll screen and I can see it as one
page with my PAINT SHOP PRO.
Thanks guys.

PDFcreator can save an entire web page as a PDF, PNG, JPG, TIFF, BMP,
PCX, PS, or EPS file.

I'm trying out Faststone and Screenshot Captor at the moment after using
MWSnap for years. The Faststone link takes you to the free version. I'm
undecided on which I like best so far.

Correct. EG: C:\MyFolder\MyFilename.jpg
BTW - the page where you downloaded the program from explains
exactly how to use it :-)
Indeed. The program download page contains several additional
options and explains what each are.
Great.
Have a peep at this snapshot of my copy of the program to see how
I've got it set up at the moment: http://tinyurl.com/6f84ye
Works nicely...
Just the job eh! One nice thing is that you can also set the GUI to
control how wide the page is that gets downloaded to match your
screen resolution width (it kinda shrinks the page). Very useful.
Or you can adjust it in PSP afterwards etc.
YW.
