- Linux LiveCd with torrent installed?
- Posted by Achim Nolcken Lohse on February 17th, 2007
Am running Win98 and unwilling to install because of security
concerns. So I booted up with Puppy Linux and tried to install Azureus
and Java. The attempt was such a miserable failure that I have no idea
what went wrong or how far, if anywhere, I got.
I followed the Linux Users Installation Guide and even the syntax was
rejected by my system.
When I tried running Azureus with the command "./azureus" the response
was "azureus is a file".
The reason I chose Puppy to try is that it runs in RAM, and doesn't
require me to keep the CD in the burner. But perhaps one of the other
distros has a bittorrent client already available? I've got current
versions of Suse 10.1, Suse 10.2, Knoppix 5.1.1 LiveDVD, Mandriva One,
PCLinusOS 93a Big Daddy, and Simply Mepis 6.01, but don't really want
to boot up and look through each one to see if any have bittorrent
available....

I thought puppy had a torrent client (although not a java one). What
are your machine specs? If it is old, you might not be able to run
some other live CDs.
There are actually some community builds of puppy that might include
what you are looking for. Again i'm not sure what they contain (check
out the puppy site). You might be able to do a java install with
dotpups and save your extra stuff on a flash drive. Dotpups is a bit
like downloading Windows executables - pretty much automatic.

With Mepis6 you should be able to run KTorrent. Other bit torrent
clients that should run for you are also available in most Linux live
distros. Check the included packages via Distro Watch.
BTW, I also had some challenges with azureus in Puppy.
Good Luck!

No, I checked Puppy first, and it looks liket there were requests for
a torrent client, but it hasn't happened yet.
I can run Knoppix, and all the other LiveCDs I mentioned on my
connected system. The only problem is that I've recently experienced
the DVD burner going to sleep and not waking up on long downloads, and
wonder whether the same would happen when running torrents.
That's why I was hoping to be able to do it with Puppy.
Haven't heard of dotpups before. But I think I'll try Knoppix first.
That just leaves the problem of getting past my firewall(s). Online
search hasn't been very helpfull. Set Ports 6969 and 6881 open, is
about it. Will see if that works.

Thanks, will give Knoppix or Mepis try tonight.
One other question - can bittorrent run with a firewall enabled? If
so, is there a special configuration you need?

Probably you were trying to use a trackerless torrent; ktorrent won't
work with them, and I believe that's the error it gives. Supposedly,
bittorent will handle trackerless torrents.

Yes, ver. 3.4.2-10, according to package_dvd.txt. But I just looked
through all the programs in the Internet tab, and couldn't find any
torrent there.
OTOH, Showfoto isn't listed in the package_dvd.txt, but it IS on the
DVD, so maybe they forgot to include bittorrent, or they forgot to
remove it from the package list.

From the Knoppix changelog, it looks as though bittorrent is included,
but only with the ncurses interface. If I'd realized that, I wouldn't
have suggested it; I know you prefer a more graphical interface.
I think ShowFoto is part of the digikam package.

Thanks for the heads up. I've got nothing against command line. Just
don't feel very comfortable with it anymore.
There is a single mention of showfoto in the package_dvd.txt:
But to my inexperienced gaze, it appeared to refer to showfoto as a
separate program from digikam.
Afraid I have no time left to learn what ncurses is or how to use it.
May try Suse 10.2 LiveDVD to see if it has bittorrent installed.

Have now tried to find a torrent client on the Suse 10.2 LiveDVD, but
no joy.
I did get my expectations raised when some while after loading the
distro, it suddenly detected a scanner on the usb port. But what
followed was the usual list of three unsupported Brother MFC devices,
and the advice to ask the manufacturer for drivers.
As it happens, I have the drivers available, but there are no
instructions on installing them. Perhaps that's impossible to do with
a LiveCD/DVD?
If there's an option to create a permanent home/configuration storage
space for Suse 10.2 LiveDVD, I haven't found it yet. It would probably
help a lot, since I quickly ran out of capacity with my 512MB of RAM,
and KDE started warning me to "make space". On reboot (SUSE10.2
LiveDVD doesn't release the disk on restart, so you have to wait for
the boot from Hard disk option to return to Windows) it presented a
simpler desktop display of penguins marching on ice, which I guess is
a response to my memory shortage in the previous session.

Save yourself the time and effort.
Because of the trackerless torrent and the way it has been set up,
there is only one bittorrent program that will work, uTorrent.
Doesn't matter what operating system you want to use, you're stuck
with uTorrent.

Thanks, but since I can't figure out how to run uTorrent properly

Presumably I'd still have to set a static IP address to forward my
