Mp3 to avi convert
Posted by Pete B on June 10th, 2008

For the purposes of hardware playback, I need to convert an mp3 to an
avi file.

That is an avi where the soundtrack is the mp3 and the picture side is
not relevant - could be a black picture or something like that.

Anybody know of a program which will do this *automatically*?

Don't think there is freeware for that but it can be done with Nero if you
should happen to have it. I know its not free and it isn't automatic. Guess
it depends on how bad you need it.

Why in the world would you need to do that? Oh well.

There is no program that will do it automatically that I'm aware of. You
might be able to use Virtualdub to do it with a little work though:

just managed this with Super(c) - www.erightsoft.com
(download it www.majorgeeks.com/Super_d5117.html)

For reference the settings I used.
output video - avi
codec - xvid
output audio - mp3
use ffmpeg and enable directshow decode
disable video
audio frequency set at 44100 and bitrate 128

The quick test I did renders to an .avi file which plays using VLC without
a picture. The output file was only slightly bigger (5.2MB) than the mp3
file (4.8MB). Looking at the file, it had .avi headers - looks legit.
Did not try it with other codecs only xvid.

hope this helps
