- Need CD data software
- Posted by Penny on May 16th, 2004
I need a software program to just copy data, something that works like the Zip
drive in that I could add a file to any folder quickly and simply. Any
suggestions? Thanks,

Where burners are concerned, they don't come better than Deep Burner;

You're talking about "packet writing"...a system that lets you drag and drop
files/folders to a CD-RW. Normal CD burners will NOT do this. Examples of
some that will are Adaptec's DirectCD, Ahead's InCD, Sony/Prassi abCD, et
al.
Most feel it isn't a very reliable system but if you are bound and
determined there is more info and some d/l links in my dandies (see below)
under "Other Programs" > "Packet Writers". The best of the lot IMO is
abCD...it is small, works fine and uninstalls cleanly.

suspect my post is kind of redundant on this newsgroup. I have lurked in several
groups and I found most inquires related to music or video. I appreciate the
information and will check out that software and visit your site.
As an aside, I have a 5-year-old puter with 100mHz FSB, 364MB Ram, 1 gHz PIII
and w98, minimal by today's standards but it still works for me. It came with a
100MB Zip drive, which I found very acceptable until accumulating 50 disks plus
a loaded HD. I recently added a Sony DVD/CD burner DRU-510A. I have been using
their included Sonic RecordNow software updated to v6.7.1, which I found to be
finicky on opening previously burned disks or appending same. It allows for Drag
and Drop or Add Files and Folders but as it will not always open a CD,
(sometimes yes sometimes no) it's useless. Sonic and Sony said it is a disk
problem. DVD/RW work fine but I started out using CD's to copy my zip inventory
and hate to redo everything.

I am further back than you on burning - Plextor, 8x CD-R, 4x CD-RW.

RecordNow (or CDExtreme - they are the same program) is my favorite burning
program (though I prefer Stomp's or HP's implementation of it to Sonic's)
but it doesn't do packet writing. An ancillary program normally packaged
with it named DLA (Drive Letter Access) does that.

If that's what you're doing why not just burn an entire disc of 700MB at
once instead of adding sessions? Saves time and space. And potential
problems.

without DLA (?) so I did not try it. When I called Sony or Sonic (?) support
they said don't use DLA but did not give a reason that I remember.

save many posts, web pages and software programs from the various newsgroups
etc. I went from 50 Zip disks to 8 CD's. The problem came up when I tried to
update the info on a CD. I can read the CD using the PC's drivers but I can't
when using RecordNow. Sometimes it will open but usually not. I can drag and
drop a file but I can't select a folder because the CD will not open. So I need
a different program or I guess I have to re-burn to DVD/RW or CD-RW.

Should be good for another 5 plus years! When the price really dropped on Ram
and CPU's about a year ago I updated those components.

Thanks Onno, I installed and tried DeepBurner but could not get it to append
burned CD's. DLA states it is similar to Direct CD. So I'm looking for that
program now. Also have to search for explanations of packet writing and
multisession. Tried to update my RecordNow v6 to v7 but it is a Buy item.
