- Newly seen: "Handy Find" (find as you type)
- Posted by R. L. on July 12th, 2004
Taking about the great feature in Firefox...now it seems that
you can do it in any window with this one:
http://www.handykeys.com/
"HandyFind is a faster, friendlier way to find words in
documents and web pages. It finds the words as you type so you
will find what you are looking for as soon as you have entered
enough letters. There are no windows to close or get in your
way.
HandyFind works in Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word, Notepad,
Outlook Emails, and more. A small balloon displays the letters
you have entered. The balloon turns gray if the text cannot be
found; it turns pale if you are looking at an occurrence you
have already found before.
With HandyFind, you can also highlight a word in a document
and press a key to instantly find the next occurrence of that
word. In Internet Explorer, if your search lands on a link,
you can "click" the link by pressing the Enter key. This
provides an easy way to surf the web using your keyboard."

Too bad that it has no 9x version. It is however a keeper for
those who can use it in xp or others. Just downloaded it and
find that its great.

Actually it may work in 9x, I've just never tried it. If you try this,
please let me know. (I was searching through my web logs and found
this discussion.)

Hi, there, I wonder why it is not working in 98 ... on the
page you said it would work if the window is using standard
controls. Does it need IE 6 or above??

Did it work in Notepad? I don't know any reason why it shouldn't work
in 98 but the way MS implemented the keyboard hooking support that
HandyFind relies on is probably a lot different in 95/98/ME vs
NT/2000/XP.
If it is just IE where it has a problem then I could try to figure
this out...but I don't have access to any 9x machine right now to test
this and I think most people have moved on...
Note: It does require IE5.0 or higher.

Nope, tried notepad, wordpad, browser, no luck.
Some people consider that a move backwards, I'm one of them.
Thanks for that info..
