Those 25 reasons are all wonderful. If they ever add #26 they'd really have
something:

26. Linux, like Windows, will run on nearly any computer.

FWIW, that's completely backwards. Windows will only run on x86
platforms, whereas Linux will run on a wide variety of
architectures.

Of course, that fact doesn't help you if you have trouble getting
something to run on your particular computer.

3 Reasons not to.
I'd have to change my printer, my scanner, a zip drive, none of which

1) linux seems free but it is not

2) Most users cannot modify code... simple users dont have to convert to
linux..
let the programmers convert to linux.

3) High quality support for windows is available on the microsoft
newsgroups,
and google. There is an answer for every problem imaginable on google.

4)Linux will die like the dinosaurs...or it must evolve into something
better than it is now.

5)you said it.... 35 years.... old outdated... its time to move on!

6)There is no forced upgrade for windows.. this is a lie and the person
writing this should be dropped in tar and feathered.

7) Learning how to use linux in a full extent is a tremendus task! You have
to learn to compile programs, to use shell commands...
Its a nightmare.. no simple user wants or cares of such stuff!!!

8) must I go on? I can counter each claim of this person... he is clearly
looking at linux from his own standpoint.

You cant go around telling people to format windows and install linux... and
then .. after seeing that they cant do anything,
format linux and install windows....

The only reason I hated windows in 9x era was because it was very
unstable....
I had to reboot several times a day and format each month or 2 because
something always went wrong. WinMe was terrible so I skipped on using it for
my computers...

Then was the time when Linux standed a chance against windows...
but then Bill pulled his trick and transfered the win2000 core to the
mainstream
OS. Linux's most important argument was gone!

I reboot only when
I want to... and I format only about once a year.. but mostly because I keep
changing things. On my second computer that I use only for making graphics
and browsing, I had XP installed when I bought it in 2002 and formated 3
days ago..
It had SP1 and SP2 when they came out....
Why did I format? I just wanted to make a clean install. There was no real
problem with it.

Now with vista windows is getting even better.. I dont see how linux can
keep up...
The shell will be KDE and GNOME... they look outdated already.. especially
gnome which I never liked.

There is a possibility that a new shell will come up... with new tools. We
will see, but for sure all they are doing now
is trying to keep up.. and copying and cloning ideas that are around.

I have to refute this myth - again.

I've been using win9x for nearly 10 years, and I've had to learn about it,
often by experience, but I soon learned to do a reinstall of the OS, which
fixes probs and doesn't lose data. I hate to think how many I've done, but
not recently!

Later, thanks to helpful folks on ngs and newsletters like langalist, I
learned to take out the trash, maintain, by running a few simple progs,
regularly, (Sunday Night before bedtime), I've found it a pretty stable and
forgiving platform.

It's short of perfect, but it'll do for me and I don't have to be a genius
or a really bad-tempered anorak.

Ok, but I would feel enslaved if I had only linux.. everyone would be using
all those
great applications for windows, millions of freeware around millions of
fantastic applications, and I would be stuck on a barren linux platform.

Not to say that I could not work on that platform at all. A mac yes.. but
not linux.

Do you also have windows installed somewhere so you can have some fun?

You remain completely clueless about the software available for Linux,
and you grossly overstate the amount of freeware for Windows.

What are you talking about? mike only wrote about using Win9X, then
you ask whether he's also got Windows installed?

Many "answers" on the internet, usenet included, are worse than
worthless. If you can't tell a good answer from a dangerous one you
have to pay for help.

(Your post is proof of this.)

It's constantly evolving. But it was already better, more stable,
more versatile, than Windows the day it started.

The human form is a few million years old, so is it outdated also?

Sure there is - if you're running 98, how do you get upgrades to
protect you from new exploits? Oh, you either don't or you upgrade.

So is learning how to use Windows to the same extent. Most users
don't know how to use Windows properly - they know just enough to do
what they need to do.

Not to USE linux.

Same as batch commands in Windows.

We're talking about computer USERS, not Luddites, dragged to computers
kicking and screaming against their will.

You shouldn't have started.

Oh, and you're totally unbiased.

No one is, but don't let that keep you from burning your straw man
down.

In article <43c69cb7_2@newsgate.x-privat.org>, "kenny" <-> says...

Yeah, Linux is just a recreation of Old and Busted Unix. 35 years, what
was Linus thinking?! On the other hand, NT-XP is a recreation of the
sleek, ultramodern VMS OS, which is a mere 30 years old. Which
definitely makes it the New Hotness. Definitely.

I will answer to this one only, since this one interests me...

The body (hardware) is ok, it is the mind (software) that is the problem.
Humans are indeed outdated. The way they think and act are dangerous now
that they have become the dominant species of the globe. They have the power
of destruction fast with nuclear wars, or slower (but not too slow) by
pollution and destruction of the natural resources.

Humans need a serious update if they want to survive, and a major shift of
how they use technology, and how much they care about unity of the human
race.
They will have to get their priorities straight or perish.

I can't say I'm surprised that you answer a rhetorical question with a
little essay in order to dodge backing up your ridiculous statements
about an operating system. But since you don't have anything to say to
back them up, would you consider no longer posting them as drive-bys in
so many threads?

That reminds me...back in '88 or '89 when MS talked Dave Cutler (VMS'
daddy) and a bunch of others to leave DEC. Pretty soon after that the
MS-IBM OS/2 marriage started crumbling...tears, recriminations. And NT
was "born."

Fwiw, I was working for a company at the time that developed Unix for
intel chips...somewhat "revolutionary" idea. Back then we were called
The Santa Cruz Operation, the os was called Xenix and its patent-holder
to whom we paid licensing fees was a company by the name of Microsoft.

They figured *nix on an intel was a curiosity and never bothered to
bring it to market.
