[PL] PL2007 Program Removals
Posted by Susan Bugher on January 13th, 2007

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/200...Procedures.php

"Removal Procedures"
"Programs are removed from the Pricelessware List. if they do not meet
the eligibility requirements. If it is learned that the program's ware
type is ineligible or it becomes ineligible the program is removed from
the Pricelessware List.. If a program becomes shareware and a "last
Freeware version" is not available for download the program is removed
from the Pricelessware List. If a program is not available for download
the program is removed from the Pricelessware List."

Two programs appear to be candidates for removal from the Pricelessware
List, the Google Toolbar and Ragtime Solo.

Can anyone furnish the information that's needed to keep these programs
on the list? If not I will remove them.

------------

Google Toolbar
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/200...ET.php#0324-PW

I have not been able to find the current stable version of the Google
Toolbar for Firefox. I have not been able to find file names or file
sizes or download links for *installation* files for the Google Toolbar.

-------------

Ragtime Solo (v 5.6.5)
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/200...ME.php#0612-PW

As far as I know no one has made a COMPLETE download of Ragtime Solo
using the link that's shown on the PL page. AFAIK no other download link
is available.

Joined just fine using my free version of WinRar. I did have to rename
RagtimeSolo.z01.zip to RagtimeSolo.z01. Anyone have a totally free
unzipper? If so, rename that file, then extract and join starting with
RagtimeSolo.zip. That might solve the problem.

I did get the program several months ago and installed it. AFAIK it is
ok. It does give the "no commercial use" warning, but then goes ahead
and cooperates. It does ask to send a UDP datagram to
265.265.265.265.......I wasn't sure what that was, so I said 'no'.

Thank you Vegard. There used to be MANY files available for
download - I doubt we'll be able to find more than a fraction of them. I
did find the French version. If we can't find all those files the PL2007
description will have to be revised -> add a whole lot of "no available
download" notes in the "OS" and "languages" parts of the description
which currently read:

<q>
Windows OS: Windows
Other OS: Mac OS X; Mac OS 8/9.
Languages: English; German; French; Dutch
</q>

This Wayback Machine web page shows the files but not the file names:

<http://web.archive.org/web/20040812093430/http://www.ragtime-online.com/Content/download_rts_program/index.html>

a brief summary of the files that are needed for a "complete set":

Windows - Version 5.6.5
RagTime Solo for Windows (35 MB)

English;
RagTime_Solo_5.6.5_en.exe
http://users.pandora.be/erlandvo/Rag...olo_565_en.exe

German;
RagTime_Solo_5.6.5_deCH.exe

French;
RagTime_Solo_5.6.5_fr.exe

http://netfox2c.free.fr/Telechar/pc/...o_5.6.5_fr.exe
36100 KB

Dutch
RagTime_Solo_5.6.5_nl.exe

manuals in PDF format
English; German; French; Dutch
file names?

----------

Mac OS X - Version 5.6.4
RagTime Solo for Mac OS X (43 MB)
English; German; French; Dutch
file names?

---------

Mac OS 8/9 - Version 5.6.1
RagTime Solo for Macintosh (50 MB)
Update RagTime Solo 5.6.1 --> 5.6.2
English; German; French; Dutch
file names?

If we can't find all those files the PL2007 description will have to be
revised -> add a whole lot of notes saying (not available) in the "OS"
and "languages" parts of the description which currently say:

Windows OS: Windows
Other OS: Mac OS X; Mac OS 8/9.
Languages: English; German; French; Dutch

--------------

The program descriptions are in HTML "snippet" files -> we can show as
many links as we like in the PL2007 descriptions - if we can find them. . .

erm. . . none of that information is helpful.

This is the information that's NEEDED for the Firefox and IE versions of
the Google Toolbar:

version (and the URL where you found the info):
release date (and the URL where you found the info):
file name (and the URL where you found the info):
file size (and the URL where you found the info):
download link (and the URL where you found the info):

The download link should allow people to download the Firefox file with
IE and vice versa - some links redirect and offer the wrong file or
won't let people download the file. The file should be complete -> no
additional downloading required to install the program.

I'm not real hopeful after spending several fruitless hours yesterday
searching. . . ISTM the Google Toolbar is more like Webware than
Freeware - especially since it has those automatic updates that can't be
turned off. . .

Make that three. ePrompter is the latest candidate.
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/200...ET.php#0903-PW

ePrompter has an auto-updater. In another thread ([PL] ePrompter help
needed) I asked if there was a way to disable that "feature". To date no
one has posted a way to disable the auto-updater and two people have
said it can't be done.

"Programs are removed from the Pricelessware List if they do not meet
the eligibility requirements."

An app with an auto-updater that can't be disabled is NOT Freeware per
the ACF definition: "Legally obtainable software that you may use at no
cost, monetary or otherwise, for as long as you wish" (
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/WareGlossary.php ) because you
CANNOT use it "for as long as you wish". At best you can use the LATEST
VERSION of the software - which may be quite different from the version
you downloaded.

This issue coulda/shoulda been raised during the Pricelessware selection
process -> the program could have been placed on the PL2007 Ware Ballot.
I'm still hoping for miracles but if a solution to the auto-update
problem is not posted in the near future the app will be removed from
the 2007 Pricelessware List.

It occurs to me that maybe NONE of the 28 people who voted for ZA are
willing to install the latest bloated version. IOW - I may never
get an answer. . .

Would people please give me some input -> pick one of these options

1. continue to show the most recent version of ZA (we would need make
sure it is NOT Nagware)
2. show an older version

If sentiment is clearly in favor of an older version, we can stop
worrying about the Nagware issue and start discussing WHICH older
version should be shown.

The two files have the same md5 and sha1sums, so I guess they are both

http://web.archive.org/web/200605201...reevsplus.html

It seems to be the same file: the size matches the file I downloaded on
11/3/2006.

v 2.10
http://www.fnprg.com/softcat/dl/softcat_setup.exe
4788 KB 4.67 MB (4,902,283 bytes)

I started checking a little while ago. . .

redirects to:
http://www.fnprg.com/softcat/dl/softcat_setup.exe *NOT FOUND

The file was moved from .com to .net and the copy that stayed was
renamed. IMO that does not bode well for the future. I'd be a lot
happier if we could find an off-site repository that has the file -
dunno what the EULA for this version says but I IIRC free distribution
was NOT allowed in years past.

Susan Bugher bracht volgend idee uit :
To find out about the nagware, I installed version 7.0.302
of ZAPro on a standalone computer.

During installation there was an option to choose for:
- Trial ZoneAlarm Security Suite (15 days trial)
- No Thanks (= no trial)

I chose for the "No Thanks" option after which
the usual installation of ZAFree proceeded.
After the installation I did several restarts of the PC.

No further nagging could be observed.
The picture of ZoneAlarm in the Taskbar has changed,
as shown on the website of ZoneLabs.

After 4 of 5 restarts without problems, I did a
"clean" uninstallation of ZoneAlarm (Free).
I finally removed one folder of Zone Labs from the Program Files
and that completed the removal of ZAFree from the PC.

Thank you.

I'll show the current version on PL2007.

That's subject to change IF the group wants to make a change due to the
bloatware that's been added. 28 people voted for the current version
(per the program's description during the selection process). ISTM at
least 15 people need to express a preference for changing to an older
version to warrant making a change. To date only 3 people have done that.
