- portable file manager needed
- Posted by badgolferman on August 7th, 2006
I am looking for a file manager that has the following features:
-- no-install, portable
-- saves configuration
-- dual pane, not tabbed
-- directory compare
-- skip uncopyable files instead of quitting
-- progress meter in percentage, not time remaining
The closest ones I found are the free version of Servant Salamander and
freeCommander, they both have their caveats however. SS does not
report directory compares properly even though you can see uncopied
folders nor save settings and FC is just too damn slow to start and
close.
Any other candidates? Thanks

But YMMMV, FreeCommander is the opposite of slow on my system.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately A43 did not have directory
compare as far as I could see. freeCommander doesn't seem to run well
from a USB drive. I am giving 2explorer a shot since it seems to fit
the bill right now.

My favorite is TurboNavigator (v1.47 was the last version). You can
still find a link to it somewhere. I always try the others, but I always
come back to TN.

This program looks like it wants to install. I want it to be portable.
Can you comment on that?

Maybe you can unpack the installation file with Universal Extractor

Universal Extractor is a program do to exactly what it says:
extract files from any type of archive, whether it's a simple zip file,
an installation program, or even a Windows Installer (.msi) package.

The program does install Turbo Navigator, but it only installs
the files listed below. Keep tn.exe, which is all you need, and
then uninstall the program. After that you can rename tn.exe
to Turbo Navigator.exe, or whatever you want to call it, and
put it anywhere that you want to.
C:\Program Files\Turbo Navigator
donate.txt 3 KB
license.txt 3 KB
readme.txt 9 KB
tn.exe 683 KB
tnweb.url 1 KB
unins000.dat 2 KB
unins000.exe 72 KB
whatsnew.txt 8 KB
If you change the default configuration it does save it's settings
in the registry, but that is not a big deal to me because for one
time use on another computer I am not going to change any of
the default settings. If you need to, after you set it up the way
you want it on one computer, you can export the settings to a
reg file and then add it to the registry on another computer. I
have never tried it, as I have no need to, but it should work.
The registry settings are in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Turbo Navigator

I also use Turbo Navigator.
