I have fond memories of playing this game on my first computer, a 25
MHz 486 with a whopping 4 MB of RAM. Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon is now
being given away for free by it's publisher, 2K Games, via Fileshack.
It comes bundled with, and runs inside of, the DOSBox emulator, and
also includes the manual and copy protection reference sheet. Go and
get your retro on!

*Prot3anThr3ad* leapt out of the bath and screamed "EUREKA!" before typing in alt.comp.freeware:
Just to say I installed this on my Father's Win XP box last week, and it runs just fine under the DOSBox
emulator.

I remember playing 'RAIN' on a Commodore PET 2001 which could go to a
whopping 32 KB of RAM (yes, up to 32 KILO-bytes).
In RAIN, a stick man walked back and forth under user control to try
and avoid the rainsdrops coming down on him.

By contrast, nowadays you feel deprived if you're not using duel 19
inch TFTs, a pair of $300 graphics cards, force feedback joysticks,
seven channel 200 Watt surround sound, water chilled components, 750
GB hard drives and a PC cabinet that lights up like a flashing
Christmas tree on amphetamines.

Why this?
My XP machine can still play/run RT on DOS, with all sound and GfX. I
remember that you have need to install smartdrv.exe for that program.
But that was on my 386SX/25 Card inside an AMIGA, newer PC's don't need
that smartdrv.exe really and can spare some hi-RAM for other TSR. (Just
start TSR's you need... keyb, mouse, CD-ROM etc.)
By the way, that machine you describe above is outthrown money, with a
useless TFT connected to. Or even better... buy a 10bit-DAC GfX Card
and connect it to a 8bit lame TFT.
Well well, the update for 10bit TFT will come...
. The best would be,
to change the hardware every two years... (oL' CRT's, I mean some years
old used, can do 10 bit).
Or some tricks to demand more use to the Hardware (turning on/off
monitors, when resetting the machine. What a great invention called
energy saver, obviously that I can buy a new CRT 2 years earlier
...... OH YES I FORGOT, you need to start the machine just once the
day, who needs so much cold-boots??? ts, ts...)

Sorry, it worked in the beginning of december. Probably '2k Games'
didn't like that the direct DL-link was /outed/ on that joystiq page and
maybe in other places, so changed the link. I guess they really want
your temporary short-term-working throw-away e-mail address for some reason.
