The desired result that I described is a *rectangular* area of text
within the original text with the upper left corner at "23"
and the lower right corner at "46". You have to view the posting
with Courier or some fixed-pitch font to see the effect.
(It has nothing to do with crystal balls or divining.
I've read many of your posts on various newsgroups before
and I've always found your comments helpful ... until now.
I wasn't expecting this kind of snottiness from you).

I understood what you wanted, could see it too.

Sure it does. Your example used 12 characters as the desired result.
What if it was 11 or 13? How would the program know how you wanted them
arranged? Even using 12 characters, how would the program know if you
wanted a box 4x3 (as you have it) or 3x4, 6x2, 2x6, 1x12 or 12x1? And
what of text as opposed to numbers?
Certainly, such a program could be written but the desired row/column
structure would have to be defined by the user. Then there is still
that problem with non-factorable quantities of characters.

Ultraedit does it without any problem- though it is not freeware, but it
sure proofs that it is possible, doesn't it. you select block mode - and
done.

Yes, it will let one select, copy and paste a rectangular block; but not
an *asymmetrical* one such as that illustrated in the OP. Not in block
mode.

It is as far as UltraEdit is concerned. IMO too. His desired example
starts in (if you will) row 2/column 3 and ends at row 4/column 6. Such
isn't selectable in UltraEdit block mode, gotta start/end on the same
column.

The result was a cute little 4x3 box but not the selection he wanted to
put in it; it was asymmetrical.
First of all, it was unformatted text, not a matrix. Not in the usual
sense. Secondly, I haven't seen "many editors" mentioned that can do
it. Rod says that the scintilla thing does and I doubt him not. I
tried another - don't recall which - which solves the problem by having
the user input the desired array format. That's pretty much the only
way a programmer could solve the problem. Works OK but not exactly
convenient.
Ya basta.

Of course, this assumes that you are looking at it in a fixed width

Perhaps you need to increase your caffeine intake? :-)

At least he's not a "Rod Speed". If you've ever been in the aus groups,
and come across him, you'll know what I mean - he knows a fair bit about
some stuff, but resorts to simplistic insults whenever someone points
out his errors. So simplistic that it is referred to as a "RodBot", and
people have written rodbots...

Is now, more or less (took 3 months), but will be lousy until I get new

The bummer is that the implanted lens was supposed to give me good
distance vision - and did, for a few days until the macula became
swollen. Now, even though the swelling is gone, the eye is worse than
it was originally and doesn't focus at any distance. I'm hoping it can
be corrected with glasses to something close to 20/20. With the
cataract, the best they could do was 20/30 or less.
Sure glad I only had one done
