I thought Textpad was not freeware.
Isn't there a trial period?
What happens after the trial period is over? Does it stop working or
does it just nag you?

I will have to investigate jEdit and X2; was unaware they were
capable of discrete block highlighting functions.

Otherwise, I have been using PSPad and CryptEdit. PSPad is FAR
the superior over any other I have found. It has one feature
not found in any other wordprocessing editor: it will permit
reformatting of whole paragraphs or documents according to
linelengths which you change by simply moving your margin arrows,
and the result is PERMANENT since it recognizes and replaces
ODOA bytes (end of line and return) according to your
movement of the margins. Neat! Kewl! Highly useful! Plus, it
does the rectangular BLOCK EDITING that the original poster
wanted.

It's pretty mild nagware, the splash screen stays up for an
annoyingly long time. Otherwise it's completely functional.
