Irfanview, with the plugins download installed, will do this.

I've never had QuickTime installed. All I have on my hard drive is the
following:

"C:\Program Files\IrfanView\Plugins\Quicktime.dll"

It came from the plugins download at the Irfanview site.

Heh. I guess I should. I think that maybe his readme needs to be
updated. Or maybe I just stupidly let the cat out of the bag. Ooops.

Coincidentally, I just configured my system to play .mov files the
other day. What I did was to save a move file to my hard drive:

http://www.moderntv.com/modtvweb/contents.htm

scan it for viruses and then double clicked on it. Once the "Open
with..." window opened, I left the checkmark by "Always use this
program to open these files" and then searched for "IrfanView". If you
try this and can't find a listing for it, then click the "Other..."
button and find the IrfanView executable. Once you get the program
selected, just click the "OK" button and there you go. I did this and
was pleasantly surprised to see the .mov file open in IrfanView. You
can even make it full screen (although it's kinda grainy.)

I've *never* installed the Quicktime program (since my last hard drive
wipe and reinstall) because it's nagware. I had done so previously,
but since then I've wiped my hard drive and reinstalled everything
from scratch. Maybe some other program I use installed some of the
modules, although I doubt it.

Just occurred to me what might have happened. I installed
RealAlternative and it came with a type of Media Player Classic. Just
guessing, but that might have contained the codec.

I find it more likely that the MOV file you managed to play with
Irfanview used a (general or old) codec that was possibly installed with
your OS.

When I did not have Quicktime (Alternative) installed, Irfanview did
indeed play one or two MOV files I had, but not all the others with the
Sorenson Quicktime codec. I find it very unlikely that Irfanview can play
a video without the codec.
Even now that I have Quicktime Alternative installed, Irfanview won't
play MOV, except for the ones it always played.

Another option to play quicktime files is to install Quicktime and then
uninstall it. You can even reset the registry if you want. Irfanvies does
work this way.
