- Reminder program that plays every x # of hours, minutes until you say "yes" after time you request?
- Posted by MitchellWmA on March 10th, 2007
I remember seeing an old Win3x program years ago that was really
great. I haven't found anything that would do what this one did even
on all the priceslessware ones (incl. Perpetual Reminder or whatever
it's called).
This program was specifically for car maintenance but it was unique
and could have been used for other things. You'd set the reminder,
yes, but it would prompt you continuously (at your preset request of
hours or minutes) until you clicked on the YES. Then once task
completed it would reset to next date.
So let's say you had to change the oil every 6 weeks. You set the
reminder 6 weeks ago so it would start prompting you today at 2:00
p.m., the time you specified (though it gave you a pre-reminder on
Thursday, say).
Today at 2 p.m., if I've changed the oil, fine. I click on YES the
reminder resets for 6 weeks from today to remind me again.
If, however, I didn't change the oil it'll reminder me daily till I do
it. Or I could ask it to reminder me every couple of hours, whatever.
And if I changed it this coming Monday -- then it would reset to 6
weeks on Monday.
Anyway, what I remember about the program is its simplicity.
Perpetual Reminders is a headache to use. Nothing I've seen before or
since did what this app did. PUAC is great but it lacks the ability
to remind one every 6 hours for example on Saturdays and Sundays only.
You can set a reminder to play only on weekends of course but you have
to do up a separate one for each time slot. Drag.
So if anyone has seen anything like this please advise
thanx

Although simpler than most programs of its type, this is my program of
choice for reminders. It's small, requires no install, writes its
settings to text files within its folder, and (most important to me)
can be controlled - in that I get to choose whether it runs all the
time or only when I want it to.
Date Reminder
Home page: http://home.mnet-online.de/horst.muc/
<quotes from the page>
This is a Date Reminder for recurring or nonrecurring events, like
birthdays, bills to pay, appointments etc...
The date reminder can be run from the Startup folder with an option to
show only if there is something to remind you of.
Features:
The reminders are listed in chronological order, beginning today, each
with day of week and number of days ahead. For recurring events only
the next one is listed.
Events may recur every year, month, week, day, or every 10 days, every
2 weeks, every 3 month etc.
Reminders can be marked "done", i.e. "dealt with".
Past events will remain in the list until they are marked "done". In
an extra history list you can review the last seven days.
An advance notice marker can be set a number of days before an event.
Calendar box available for selected reminder (right mouse button) and
for date input.
Date format according to the user's regional settings. A different
format can be specified in the INI file.
The user interface is controlled by language files. English (default)
and some other languages are included. Custom language files can be
created.

Very nice, rudimentary reminder program. Good for many uses. It
doesn't do what I need, but can see it might be good (if it works

isnt' all that comprehensive yet.
Thanks for the tip.

Any time. I'm pretty well at anybody's service in here for the next

I did a search on the Portable Freeware site and came up with five

It has been full developed in C/C++ with the last release of Win32 API

You'll never forget any appointment and your friends' birthdays, and

It isn't comprehensive, the reminder options are not as customizable
as one would like (I'm personally used to Outlook and other apps that
allow much more flexibility) but it should be good for many people.
Only for WinXP.
Looks good and the fact that you don't need extras to be installed is
a great thing. It's not what I described I needed at all, but sounds
good nonetheless for other applications.
Thanks.

Ouch. Hope you get better soon, though if there isn't a lot of pain
-- hopefully -- having some rest might be a nice change (?).
Thanks. In this case it's for home computer so not so much of a
portability issue, it's having the ability to set a reminder for - say
- weekends and within the start and end times, to have that reminder
come up every x hours or x minutes.
Having the ability to have it reset would also be a bonus in a
reminder like the one for changing the oil, but I doubt I'll ever find
one that did what that Win3x app did.
But it's always worth a try. cheers

No worries - it will heal up nicely. And it sure is nice resting and

I'm kicking myself now. I re-read your original post and don't know
why I got the impression it had to be portable. But since that's not
an issue, maybe Kirby will do it. It used to be completely free, but
now offers a light and professional version. It sounds very intricate
and just might be able to do exactly what you want. See if this one
maybe fits the bill:

See above for the Win3x possibilities, and as far as resetting, the
original one I recommended (Date Reminder) will reset, but I think
only for a specific day - not multiple times in one day. I keep
perpetual reminders in it for paying my bills, and only needed to
enter the info once.
Yeah. If nothing else, it's always interesting to check these programs

Would you consider creating a check list of various features a reminder
app *may* have? Something that could be used to for comparison -
possibly leading to a table like this:

or this:
http://www.freewareguide.de/tmp/perfect-editor.html
The second type of web page could be "built" with ListSquared => any
number could play. IOW - upload the ListSquared file to PWH or the wiki
where anyone could get a copy and add more apps. . .
Program: List² (ListSquared)
Company: Monkeyware Software
Install: (n.i.)
Ware: (Freeware)
http://www.bitride.com/freeware.php
FWIW it would be pretty easy to convert a ListSquared file to a sortable
web page like the first example.

Can it be done in <mumblewarning$waremumble> Excel instead? It's what
I'm used to.
<ducking and hiding behind a pillow while anxiously awaiting a reply>
I might ask you do that part, unless you have easy instructions on how
I can do it.
Now for what I've been doing in the meanwhile:
Remember when we were doing the Pricelessware nominations a little
while ago and you and I collaborated on creating a way for everyone to
have an easy time submitting programs? Well, I decided since I have
all this time on my hands, I'd follow through on my promise to try and
improve the methodology of our efforts, and I'm getting there.
Remember this table for entering nominations?
http://download.yousendit.com/7EA92EC4599236D2
Well, I decided that a two-column table would be less intimidating and
easier on the eyes. And I figured we could use more room to write
explanations of exactly what's wanted in each box (that third column
only gave us so much room).
I hunted around for some useable JavaScript that would make tooltips
that don't disappear until you tell them to, so you can copy and paste
from them if you want to. I found some that's working quite nicely,
and have been ever so slowly rewriting the code to fit onto the page.
I'm about halfway done creating the code, and once that's done, it
will be a simple matter of cutting and pasting into the original page,
and doing a bit of snipping to get rid of the third column.
The whole thing is still rather rough and ragged (it's downright
shabby yet), but I figured you might want to take a look and see if
you think this might work when combined with our original efforts. As
yet, all I have on the page are the links that will replace the text
in the left-hand column of the original page, but you can use your
imagination to envision how those will work in the finished "product."
Enjoy!

Yup *AND* your "check list" could also be used for posts to the ng about
a particular app.
Sure. Any *spreadsheet*
or any text editor that can handle tabs will
work. If you use a spreadsheet copy and paste the data into a text file
and save. Either way the next step is to import the tab delimited text
file into ListSquared and export it as HTML. That's all you need to do!
Two easy steps and it's done.
The sortable pages use two files: a .php file and a .csv data file. I'll
upload a .php file to the ~mvp directory - then you can upload .csv
files with tabular data. Doesn't matter how many rows and columns there
are, the PHP file will figure that out. lessee. . .
P_TEST.php and P_TEST.txt
Done, I'll upload them after I send this.
The URL to view the table will be:
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/~mvp/P_TEST.php
Upload a different P_TEST.txt file to see how it works. (read this file
first: http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/~mvp/info.txt )
I moved those files into the 2007 archive:
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/ftp/Archives/2007/
Thanks. Looking good.
Not really my baby any more though (dunno yet
who's going to handle the PL selection process next year).
I uploaded your file to the wiki files directory to make it easier to
view and save (suggest you do the same with any revisions).

Hey there,
In my hunt for the features available on reminders far and wide, I've
stumbled across a standalone donationware reminder program that just
might fit the bill for you. I've switched to it from Date Reminder
because I like it so much. This program:
1) Is 1.11 MB downloaded.
2) Is portable, although it does have some registry keys.
3) Has the option to start automatically on bootup.
4) Will alert you in advance (defined in increments of minutes, hours
or days)
5) Has a snooze feature in case you don't want to get to a particular
reminder right now, but want to be nagged to pieces until you do.
6) Has repeating ability, so you can set reminders to go off regularly
(weekly, monthly, yearly, etc.).
7) Reminds you with a popup, a user-defineable sound, and can run a
program.
8) Has the ability to mark events done.
9) Gives you a broad ability to review the events you've set up,
including ones that are past due.
10) Will nag you to pieces on any that are past due.
11) Highlights past due reminders in red so they stand out.
12) Shows a countdown for each reminder letting you know how long
until it's due.
13) Has a two month calendar which you can keep visible all the time
or hide, as you wish, with one click of the mouse.
14) Allows you to add a note to any reminder. The note shows when you
hover your mouse over the reminder.
15) Allows you to set the priority of the event so that it's clearly
marked in the list.
16) Has ten different display modes, from one day to the entire year
at once.
17) Can export the list to an HTML file for you.
18) Sits in the sytem tray.

No ability that I can see for the particular behaviour I was looking

But the particular behaviour of that Win3x is just not going to be
easily found, I'm still seeing <g>. Imagine having a reminder reset
to the next time _ONLY_ after you've said you'd completed it the first
time ... awesome ...
----------------------------------
Re the 2 car apps that you have, is there any way you can post those
to the alt.binaries.freeware group? I know the one car care that I
found is not the one that I'm remembering initially as I tried that
second care care one some time ago. But perhaps the second one you
mention is the one. At any rate, wouldn't hurt to see.
----------------------------------
Re the repeating x # of times during a specific days of the week, I'm
such a goon. I looked at PUAC again and found that you can do this, I
just hadn't thought it out.
If I set a periodic alarm from today till 2099 (which certainly more
than adequately covers the time I'll need till <g>), then say only on
Saturdays and Sundays, I accomplish the same thing. I've now set
those couple of reminders to do that every 6 hours on the weekend only
in this manner. Sometimes it takes several tries to get something
straight.
So I'm covered for now. And with the advantage that most of my
reminders need to be voice ones since I'm not always sitting at the
computer when I need reminding of things. I hear them even better
than I see them <g>.
----------------------------------
But would like to take a peek at those Win3x apps if possible.
Thanks for everyone's help. Perseverance pays off.

This is a link for Car Care, which was the other one mentioned in that

I have of it is Shareware as well, since the filename is ccgdemo.exe.
I'm using Rot13 on the link since it's not freeware. I don't recommend
bothering with this one since I'm sure we can come up with a freeware
solution for you:
uggc://jjj.nn1pne.pbz/pneyrljner/pnepner.ugz
I think you can probably do it with any reminder app simply by adding
multiple reminders for one task.
True. Each program is different, and we have to get the hang of how to
work them. (:
Just for your information, the chart I'm making will be sortable, and
I have columns for sound, portability, etc. One feature that might be
of interest for you is commandline support. There are several that
have it, and they're easily found by doing a search for commandline. I
have a feeling that would probably make a reminder program do pretty
well anything you want it to do. It would just be a matter of the
initial setup.
See above.
It certainly does! And it leads to some fun when trying out the
software. (:

Actually, yesterday something came up. The thumb drive has helped
with my daily work enormously. I'm much more efficient because I now
pretty much carry around everything I need to do my job. As I'm
changing jobs in April, I realized that I'm tired of setting up
Outlook, etc., every time I start a new contract. I've decided to
carry around my own reminder program so that I'm always ready to go
rather than exporting everything when I leave and importing everything
when I start somewhere new.
I tried the Event Manager yesterday at the office. It actually does
not handle repeating reminders at all well. I entered in one
repeating reminder yesterday and it took the app 5 mins to process
that one entry *g*. I thought at one point that it'd frozen since it
seemed to stop working.
So will definitely take a look at all these apps you've mentioned. I
don't care what an app is called or what it says it's geared for.
Often it'll do a general job anyway. thx
