- REQ: Video/movie editor program
- Posted by Vegard Krog Petersen on June 20th, 2007
What would you recommend as a freeware video/movie editor program? Ease
of use and functions.
I'm gonna install it on all the PC at my workplace (public library), and
we can't afford Adobe Premier Elements or similiar...
Thanks in advance! :-)

Unfortunelately, it's Win2000 machines. Sorry, should have mentioned
that. Besides it got slaughtered in download.com's review:

Vegard;
I have little experience with video editing. Having said that, take a
look at Virtualdub <http://www.virtualdub.org/> and
<http://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualdub/>. The reasons I recommend
it are:
- The s/w is pretty easy to operate
- It's relatively mature, decent doc, active community, etc
- Free/Open Source, that is, the GNU license would fit in your org
Let us know how it goes!

That's strange. I've used MovieMaker. It gave me no grief at all, has lots
of enthusiast's who produce free filters for it, robust. . . My only
complaint -- and the reason I don't use it -- was that it's output formats
were limited to Windows wmv or huge dv-avi formats.
That said, I found these via a quick Google:
Not tried this one myself.
http://www.bobyte.com/AviTricks/index.asp
I've tried this one and found the interface annoyingly difficult and
non-intuitive but YMMV.

Not heard or tried this one.

Good call. If it weren't for the fact that I'm no longer on Windows, I
would have given it a go. Although I've never tried it, you might want
to have a look at LiVES:
http://lives.sourceforge.net/index.php?do=screenshots
Looks pretty cool.
A program I use quite a lot is Avidemux:
http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/
It doesn't have the same functionality as something like MoviePlayer,
but it's very good for adding effects, subtitles, and so on.
Also, maybe check out the selection at:
http://tv.isg.si/site/free_video_edi...ts_per_page=10
Something I also haven't tried is Avid Free:
http://www.avid.com/products/freedv/index.asp
Avid is a commercial outfit, but I'm presuming their free edition is
genuinely free. Please don't flame me if I'm wrong, though.

Perhaps it's worthwhile me giving you fair warning that some of the
software is, ahem, "quirky". iMovie/MovieMaker/VideoStudio they aint.
Avidemux works fairly well for simple clippings and effects (it has some
interesting effects that you wont find elsewhere, and I have used it for
subtitling), but you gotta puzzle it out a bit.
I've actually done a little Avidemux tutorial here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aC7G4EkYFpk
Going on for Linux is Cinelerra, which is supposedly an all-singing
all-dancing video editor. It's quite crashy, though.
I found that with a lot of the free stuff it is often quite unintuitive
to use, and you have to have a fair amount of patience to get you over
the hump.

OK, thanks for that. I'll try it out on my home PC and doublecheck with
the "powers that be" if we can get WinXP-licenses this time... :-)
Only gave my "access violatins" when I tried to import a simple avi file
and had to be terminated to exit. Out the door... :-(
Yes, I think I would like to offer something more "simpler" and
intuitive... :-)
This: FREE Advanced Video Editer at
http://softwaredepo.com/video_editer.html
Looked promising; supported: Works on 9x, Me, NT, 2k, XP, Vista
But wanted to install WhenU spyware... To bad, looked promising. Out the
door! :-(

Thanks Craig. I have tested it. It works, but I can't say it very
intuitive or user-friendly (or have what some would call a dumb-downed
interface...) :-)
I'll continue to test the other suggestions... :-)

A bit to tricky...
Looks very good. Perhaps what I wanted. But I can not use it, because of
their registration procedure. Has to be registered to a living person
and get an unlock key. Will not work for me, when the program is
supposed to be used on the public library computers...

This one may have a steep learning curve but it looks mature and seems
to have an active community: <http://www.jahshaka.org/>
If that didn't scare you away, this one is CLI-based and uses scripts &
plugins. It can stream to other editors as well (eg virtualdub):
<http://avisynth.org/>
Ready to throw your hands up? Then let's try Wax, an image animator
(video compositor). The tutorials explain the possibilities better than
the text): <http://www.debugmode.com/wax/>
