Softw. to analyze computer parts?
Posted by Sigi Rindler on June 17th, 2006

Hi,

I am looking for a software that tells me what kind of devices I have in my
computers. Right now I have sound card problems and would like to know what
maker and what model is in the machine. Of course, I could get the computer
out of the rack, open it up, and take the card out to find out the hard way.
I used to have a software, but this one died when the HDD died.

Thanks,

Murgi

Hey Murgi;

There are a number of proggies that'll do the trick. I use Belarc
Advisor. Oddly enough, I used it for the first time in months just the
day before to debug a problem w/my sound card.

My current favourite is System Information for Windows (SIW), but there are

I have long used BelArcAdvisor, but just became aware of PC Wizard 2006,
which is worth checking out:

hardware.

In my experience, it also manages to identify graphic drivers with a
higher success rate than some other packages eg Belarc Advisor

Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager. The manufacturer and

'Unknown devices' is another one. Unlike Belarc, Everest etc its a lean
no fluff pci card identifier. Great results.

Hi Sigi!

Soundcards like Soundblaster are best indentified with the printed
number on the Card. CT4769, CT4610 etc etc.. I have not seen a sysinfo
program identifying this number correctly.

2nd. Sysinfos on Windows do mostly read out the driver data of the
soundcard, so it is not sure the sysinfo will show, what you really
have built in.

Looking to the soundcard is always preferable. E.g. you can read
'Hercules Soundcard Fortissimo II', or 'Soundblaster PCI 128'. Then you
now exactly where and how to look.

P.S.: Always turn off the PC. Shutting to zero, or realeasing the power
cable. The ATX Switch should be enjoyed with care when pulling I/O
cards, cpu, memory....
