So you have to own one of their Memory Sticks to get the program.

Well, I have a 256MB Memory Stick which I bought with my digital camera, but
no mention of any serial number on it. :/

Why else would you need it? :-)

But I agree that I can't see the need to register the model and serial
number to get it since, presumably, it will only work with that product.
But Sony aren't noted for knowing or caring about the needs of their
customers - once they've bought the product.

Cheers,

Roy

To the app, the Memory Stick looks like a disk drive. They probably
want you to enter the serial number in the program in order to run it,
and it won't undelete files from any other drive-like device.

But most freeware undelete programs (like Restore) will undelete files
from a Memory Stick, so who needs Sony's
jump-through-hoops-and-roll-over software?

Did they promise not to install a root-kit with it?

No, you just need a model and serial number that works.

It doesn't seem to check how many times the program is downloaded for the
same memory stick.

Besides you can download it directly here
http://www.sony.co.jp/Products/mssup...FileRescue.exe

It attempted recovery on a Compact Flash card without complaint so you
don't need a memory stick to use it either.

Thanks for that info! As a side note, I tried using "Restoration Version
2.5.14" on my digital camera (which also uses a compact flash card), and
the program locked up, so this Sony utility might be of use.

That is, if it doesn't install a rootkit. 80)>

No. You get the root-kit too, just like with their crappy music CDs.
