that no matter how good or admired a program may be, if too few people
use that *type* of program (like an FTP server), it -- and indeed the

I lost interest in nominating at that point.

IIRC nobody nominated an FTP server that year. Looks like that may
happen again this year. So far no one has posted a PL2006 description
for FileZilla Server - PL2005 pick (4 votes).
4 (revised). It's a waste of time because there's no *guarantee* that
the program will be selected as Pricelessware.

Not quite; I think you've missed my point.
4 (re-revised). It's a waste of time because there's no guarantee that
the *category* will even appear in the final list.

There are currently over 700 subcategories listed on the ACF program
info pages. Should we select a Pricelessware program from each one? That
would be quite a change from past practice. The Pricelessware "mission
statement":
1) The best of the best in Freeware as determined by the readers of
alt.comp.freeware
2) The Pricelessware List reflects the programs favored by participants
in the alt.comp.freeware newsgroup; it is not an exhaustive list of the
best available Freeware.

I know this, Susan: it was made very clear in the course of the 2004
discussion (the thread was begun on 10 Dec, 2003). I've no wish to
start the detailed discussion up again, as it's quite clear that would
be futile. However, you opened this thread with an apparent request
for reasons why people might not bother nominating, and I've given you
the reason I didn't bother with the 2005 or 2006 process.
To recap briefly for other readers, the discussion in December 2003
indicated that no FTP server would appear on the 2004 list because the
only two which were nominated (CesarFTP and Quick'n'EasyFTP) each
attracted 5 votes, which was below the cut-off (undoubtedly because few
people use FTP servers). In keeping with the aims of the list and the
voting rules, that meant that the whole category disappeared from the
list.
I found that unfortunate -- I still do -- and it killed any interest I
had in nominating programs, as I tend to be interested in more obscure
types of applications rather than ones that everyone knows about. (I'm
not greatly interested in referring to the list to find the group's
views about browsers or e-mail clients: I'm more likely to need
recommendations for specialised apps.)
I'll stop flogging this horse now: I raised the issue only in response
to your request for reasons why people don't nominate: that's my
reason.

I appreciate your input. The felt lack of a place to find ACF
information/recommendations for specialized apps is one of the primary
reasons the ACF program information pages were created.
FWIW this was *intended* to be a humorous thread (guess I should have
sprinkled in a bunch of smileys).

FWIW - I use Filezilla server and, of the several FTP servers I tried, it
was the only one which came close to offering the functionality of Jarle
Aase's WAR programs, but with a less confusing interface. Filezilla offers
expandibility and security, and the support of the open-source community,
and in returns asks for few resources.
You want a review? I can write one for ya...

to clarify: I tend to agree with Harvey, the list doesn't help me much
other than when I send newbie friends there to look but it's not the only
place or even first on the list. I am usually looking for a specialized
program and they are few and far between at Pricelessware. Still a good
resource and Susan does a fine job maintaining it. I am doubtful that any
programs I would nominate would make the list or in some cases because of
ware issues even make the vote. Case in point Qlock. the best world clock
around IMHO but OT because it's classed as adware. So I don't bother

Regarding this value of 5 votes, in 2005 there were PW selections with
4 votes and with 5 votes as can be seen from:

I believe the last time you posted the nominated page there were over 700
programs listed so "somebody" does care. I vote but I don't nominate, and
that is because my idea of Freeware is much broader that what is acceptable
in this newsgroup. It's also why I usually just lurk.To start nominating or
suggesting someone use the freeware I use would get me in JC's killfile or
flamed by someone else. I have a bad heart and don't need the aggravation.
Still, you must be having a bad week, this doesn't sound like you at all. I
never suggested giving up the group or Pricelessware. I simply told why I
don't nominate. Besides, I'm Canadian...what do I know about anything? Go
have a nice glass of wine, a good nights sleep and you'll feel better in

There are 560 *prepared* program descriptions - Pricelessware apps and

Roughly *12* people have posted the 193 programs that are on the PL2006
nominations list. That's a low level of newsgroup participation in
anybody's book.
The remaining 367 programs on that page are gathering dust. . . most of
them are still good candidates for the Pricelessware List. . . many of
them are on PL2005.
I vote but I don't nominate, and
The critics stand on the sidelines and throw stones - they don't
participate - the list is either too pure or not pure enough to suit
them. . . FWIW - I don't need the aggravation either.
This isn't about your post. It's just nice to have a *friendly* ear.
The bottom line is I intend to enjoy the holiday season this year. I'm
not going to contribute several more months of full time work - been
there, done that for several years now. It's time to fish or cut bait.
I suggested two courses of action a few days ago: the group could help
by checking/posting more program descriptions or the PL could get a
whole lot shorter and/or simpler. Now I'll suggest a couple more
possibilities: somebody else can take over or the PL can be retired.

I don't want you to go.
But I don't see you have much choice, you are being attacked by some of
the regulars, you are getting very little support with the Pricelessware
list. Cut the lazy bastards free and go have a break. No one else will
take over the PL, and if they did they wouldn't do half as good a job as
you have done.
The ACF list has been a marvelous addition to the Pricelessware site, and
you did all the hard work. You have done such a good job, that now when
you ask for some help, we all sit back waiting for someone else to do all
the work.
I'm sorry for the way you have been treated lately, seems to be a sign of
the times.

It's hard to do all the work Susan does, then having feedback mostly from
trolls. I understand her actual sadness and I'm also sure that the PL is
dead if she gives up.
