- Vista/XP dual boot?
- Posted by DH on July 20th, 2007
TIA
I came across a program, called Vistabootpro. Link:
http://www.vistabootpro.org/
Has anyone had any experience with this program. In it's description, it
says "VistaBootPRO NAMED TO PC WORLD'S "101 FANTASTIC FREEBIES" LIST".
Is it freeware?
I am in need of a program like this one.
Again, Thanks,
Dave H.

I'm using it and it works fine. Yes, it's freeware. Be aware that you
don't need it to dual boot XP and Vista. It just makes it nice and easy to
edit the boot menu where you select which OS to run each time you turn on
the cpu.

Also be aware--should it matter to you--that, when dual booting Vista
and XP, every time that you boot into Vista, you will lose XP's restore
points.

Actually, I thought it was the other way around - when you boot XP you lose
all of the Vista restore points ( ? )

Thanks for your response.
I am a little confused with this program. I am trying to get the system to
recognize my installation of Vista on my D: drive. Apparently my boot.ini
file is controlling the booting and I thought that this program would allow
me to have the choice of C:...XP or D:....Vista. I can't seem to make it
work.
Am I offbase?

Can you say more about what is happening? Did you install XP first and
Vista second? Are you getting a boot menu when you turn on the computer?

Okay, here is the unedited version and by the way, thanks for inquiring.
I was running XP on my C: drive and I installed Vista on my D: drive with a
dual boot option. Everything was fine. Well, I'm a little embarrassed to
admit my next move. While cleaning up my c: drive, I came across a "Boot"
directory. I renamed it "Bootold" and rebooted the computer. The computer
would not boot. I went into the Repair Module from the CD and did a
"Fixboot" command. I suspect that it reconfigured the boot.ini file.
When I run VistaBootPro, it shows XP on C: and Vista on D: but it also says
that C:\ntldr is the bootloader. How do I change this?
Again thanks,
Dave H.

When you say you got into the repair module on the CD, was that the XP media
or the Vista media?
Also, have a look in the vistabootpro forums. www.vistabootpro.org

It was the XP repair module.

In that case I would try booting the Vista DVD and running it's repair
option. The reason is that Vista knows how to boot XP, but XP does not know
how to boot Vista. That's why XP has to be installed first and Vista
second. Still, I would read through the vistabootpro forums for
confirmation. I know others have had the problem you're dealing with. Hope
this helps.
