is there anything to convert ms proprietary format to xvid, divx, avi ?
i think virtualdub could, but ms asked them to drop that... and i couldnt
find a working version of that old release of vdub.
thanks, j.

http://www.videohelp.com/convert
and and under "Format Conversion" do "WMV to AVI." I think you might find
one or two free tools.

There is no link there for WMV to divx conversion, only a link for
conversion without reencoding using ASFTools.
The old version of Virtualdub (1.3c and lower)does not accept WMV/ASF with
the WMV codecs.
AFAIK, the only freeware that can do this is TMPGenc.

in videhelp -- wmv2avi, all archives -- there's a page explaining
"How to Convert WMV8 and WMV9 to other formats the BEST way"
following it i downloaded wme from ms and converted the wmv to a fixed
framerate wmv -- but vdub 1.3c gives an error when opening it. anyway the
converted file is 19mb, compared to the 33mb of the source (a home movie
about an ill labrador). i think it can be shrinked to 3-4 megs.
i'd also tried with asftools, but it'd give an error too.
i'll try again with different wme options, and will try tmpgenc as well.

Right, I forgot about that one. Here's a link:

It's a LOT of work, but worth a try if TMPGenc fails.
