Is XP Anti-spy spyware?
Posted by Trevor Noble on October 8th, 2003

In Xp AntiSpy 3.72 if you run your mouse down the list of vunerabilities to
just below the last entry, a phantom entry is highlighted. This is an
"explanation" of the Alexa Tracker and recommends a visit to the alexa
website for "further information" which will enevitably give you a dose of
spies on your computer.

The language used in the help window smacks of a hacker too?

Am I being paranoid about this app or is all really well.

Thanks
Trevor.

I don't know what has happened.. I have had the program installed on my
system a long time ago.. And I found it to be very useful.. But after a
while there weren't any updates anymore.

After reading your message I visited their site and under "Impressum" I
read the following:

"XP-antispy ist ein kostenpflichtiges Angebot, welches über den Dialer
(1,86¤/min) abgerechnet wird."

First you read a lot about spying and links to get information how to
prevent this.. And on the last page you read that you have to pay ¤
1,86 per minute for this service.

It's a scam!

But with the version of xp anti-spy which I have is nothing wrong. But
it is the last. Maybe a way to win your trust in order to make money of
you later..

*If you don't read the last page (and windows isn't patched) the dialer
is already collecting money for them without you knowing. Because the
links to get information installs the dialer on your system.*

If you go to the LEGIT xp-Antispy site (http://www.xp-antispy.org/) you'll
find the truth:

<quote>

Important information: The Domains www.xp-antispy.de und www.xpantispy.de do
not belong to the project xp-AntiSpy anymore. The new owner offers only a
dialer to download.
Please update any links and your bookmarks to www.xp-antispy.org

Why don't you ask the author and get an explanation from him
(http://www.xp-antispy.org/contact.htm)? You can use a temporary hotmail
account if you don't feel safe about it.

As for visiting the alexa site, I just went there. No spyware unless you
download and install their toolbar. I don't see any recommendation to do
such a thing in xp-Antispy.

Concerning the help file, I don't have any since it's absent from the
stand-alone zip distribution.

Most probably a bug. The author should confirm.

I have v3.72 and see nothing about Alexa down there. I believe I
have hovered my pointer over every pixel below the "Disable ZIP
functionality" text. The only mention I can find of Alexa in the
program is the "Remove Alexa registry entry" option, with the
following explanation.

The ALEXA-key is a browser-addin which collects personal data
about your surfing habits. For more info go to the producers of
ALEXA (www.alexa.com).

Click on the british flag on the main page. That's a frequent convention on
european sites for the selection of the english section.

Opera and Mozilla don't display anything except a little bit of German
language concerning Frames.

Maybe you have disabled frames? With frame viewing enabled, I see the
pages fine in Mozilla Firebird 0.6.1.

them.
