Disable special built-in (system) file protection under WinXP ?
Posted by Steven Prasil on March 2nd, 2007

When I installed WinXP I remember an option to protect important system files against modification.
Or was the enabling afterwards somewhere in an adminstration panel of WinXP ? I cannot remember exactly.

However when I want to install now a couple of personal firewalls (one after the other - of cause, not in parallel)
all of them failed to run because some "filters/drivers could not be initialized".

That's odd, because these firewalls run on other systems successfully.

This leads me to the conclusion that the reason for this is the file protection feature about
which I talked at the beginning. I could imagine that this option prevents the net traffic low level
filter/driver to be installed/hooked.

Can this be the reason ?

How can I disable this (system) file protection (for a short time)?

Steven
