Hello:

I wonder if any converters are out there, to make a networked storage
(SMB share, NDAS, ...) appear as a USB drive. That would be a small box
with a USB male connector and a 1GB Ethernet socket, remotely
configurable to access the specific networked storage.

, right? It looks like a network card, not a storage, it is up to the
system to make further conversions.

I am looking for a different device - which would present itself to the
system directly as a USB disk drive.

Not really possible.
USB drives are block devices that can be formatted,
and SMB is file based and does not provide block access.

It would be possible with iSCSI, but there is little market for that.

Hmm, tricky. Best find out whether this box can record to network,
e.g. via samba, ftp, or the like.

If not, an USB extender (not over the netwrok, as that has the
prblems I originaly mentioned) is your best option.
