Drive Image fails to restore previously recorded Image File
Posted by admiral_victory@iol.ie on January 1st, 2005

I have XP Pro SP2 installed on the C: drive of a h/d which I have
partitioned into E,F & G Partitions - D being the unpartitioned second
h/d.

Due to some sort of corruption the bootup hangs when I attempt to
load Windows - ( it stops in the black screen with the blue load
indicators paused ) - it also hangs when I attempt to go into Safe
Mode.

I next tried to install an Image File of the C: drive which I had
previously recorded using Drive Image 2002. Although this gives a
message saying "sucessfully restored Image File" ,when I again attempt
a reboot , Windows still hangs both normally and again in Safe Mode.

I have never had a problem with restoring Image Files with D.I.and was
surprised by this failure to resolve the problem as I have come to
rely on these Image Files as a "fail-safe" last resort in getting the
PC recovered from any "hitches"

Are there some corruptions which could prevent even an Image File from
restoring the "status quo " does anyone know ?

If there are , then I suppose I'll have to format the C: drive and
then restore the Image File .

You can get a result like that when the image you are
restoring would have produced that hang, say because
some of the hardware has gone bad. In other words
the problem isnt with the image restore at all, the
problem is due to something having failed hardware wise.

What file format for the "C:" partition? The second hard drive should not
have a drive letter designation if it is unpartitioned.

Did you try the XP restore diskettes which I'm sure you made when you
installed XP?

One can restore an image file, not sure what "install" means.

This is normal if you used XP's NTFS format.

Same here. Using DI 7.01 for XP.

Yes.

Why would you format if restoring an image, or partition for that matter?
Read the documentation that comes with DI2002.

Like Rod said it could be hardware, or maybe if you are loading apps
off the e or f drives at boot time (I keep my apps on partitions other
than the OS partition) maybe they got corrupted. Otherwise, assuming
the problem did not exist when you made the image, it should work. Are
you absolutely sure you overwrote the c: drive with your image? Did you
do it from a floppy? Formatting should not be necessary when restoring
an image.

It shouldnt be that since it fails to start in safe
mode when those apps shouldnt be starting.

You sure you didnt change the hardware between
the creation of the image and the restoration of it ?

That can certainly produce that sort of hang in both
normal and safe mode. The fix for that is to boot the
XP CD and repair the XP install thats been restored
from the image rather than just trying to boot it.

Yes you will read that DI2002 is for W95/W98/NT. DI 7 is needed for
W2K/WSP.

It isnt needed in the sense that DI2002 wont work with XP.

It just provides some extra capability with 2K and XP.
