externdal hard drive
Posted by albert.mills@googlemail.com on March 14th, 2007

Hi,

I want to buy an external hard drive for my laptop, which brand or
model would be most reliable? Each brand/model seems to get reviews
that trash it. I want 150 to 300 gigs.

Thanks

Needs DIY, I think. Currently only Samsung HDDs seem to be
reasonably reliable, maybe Hitachi. Bottom line: Get good cooling.
Don't depend on a single one too much. Don't trust vendor
promises.

The problem with "external HDs" is the usual USB connection,
power, and cooling. Why not buy a SATA HD and put in an
external enclosure that has its own power module and cooling
fan? Kingwin makes such a product:

Check the usual search engines for current prices.

I use similar products here in the UK - superb.

Tacky, but they do the job admirably.
