HD and BIOS Question.
Posted by F.R. Spicer on April 22nd, 2006

Hi....I have an IBM T23 laotop, with latest BIOS and embedded
controller. I wanted tp upgrade the HD so I bought a 40 gb IBM
Travelstar to replace the 20 GB Fujitsu.

The laptop wont boot. There is no selection in the BIOS about hard
drives, but I see the new drive listed by serial number in the boot
order submenus. The computer freezes at the flashing cursor......the 40
GB drive was tested and has an exact ghost of the original drive on it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

thanx

How did you do the Ghost copy ?

The main thing is to ensure that you never boot the copy
with the original visible if the OS is one of the NT/2K/XP family.

If you do boot the copy with the original visible, you will
get the symptoms you are seeing if you try booting just
the copy later, because the boot will involve files off the
original drive.

Which version of ghost ?

Did you image the entire physical drive initially ?

Quite a few laptops have a hidden maintenance
partition that makes copying a drive tricky.

You need to be aware of HPA or "Service Partition":

http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site...IGR-46023.html
Read page 9. "Creating an image of the hard drive"
1. Ensure that the Access IBM Predesktop Area security level is set to
Normal. This is the IBM default setting.

Yeah, they can be quite well hidden. On way to find even
those is to compare the size of the drive as stated on the
drive manufacturer's web site with the total of the used and
free space in shown in Everest etc.

Its always as solvable problem, just takes a bit of effort.
