Anyone have any clue as to why a working HDD that can be seen by the
BIOS and by a bootdisk with FDISK but remain undetectable by Windows XP
Home? (Undetectable as not seen by the LDM)

LDM??

Have you tried...

....another IDE (or is it SATA) channel?

...."scan for hardware changes" in device manager

...."add new hardware" from control panel.

I have inconsistent results with USB HDD's. Sometimes they'll work in one
USB port but not another, another time its vice versa. Sometimes they'll
only be detected if I use a USB1 socket sometime a USB2. And sometimes
they're not seen at all.

Ho hum.

A great quote I saw once... "Computers are like air conditioning - they work
so much better when you close windows"

YMMV

The OP appears to be talking about Disk Management,
tho its not clear where the L comes from.

Ah. I forgot that Windows XP is not necessarily pertinent to this
group. Windows XP, in some software engineer's infinite wisdom, chose
to leave out some command line utilities like the old and venerable
FDISK and instead includes a "Logical Disk Manager" which puts a GUI on
partitioning and formatting drives. (One of Microsoft "help" files
suggests to boot the PC with the Windows install CD to get to a
function similar to FDISK. And it is so lame...)

Yeah, tried it all. It's an IDE.

Yeah, I just *love* Windows; it is so *consistent*. Yawn.

Yeah, I got clients though.

thanks for the tips
