Need advice on Internal DVD/Cdrom Combo drives
Posted by barb on December 17th, 2006

I am getting a new computer. I need to know what drive(S) to get if I
want to burn and read both a dvd and cdrom.I have heard of combo drives
but do they burn and read both types of media? Also do these drives take
up 1 or 2 5 1/4 slots in the computer? Lastly, what speeds are these drives?

Thanks in advance,

BS

"Combo drive" (marketing term) usually means a drive that reads and
write cd's, and reads dvd's but doesn't write them. Drives that read
and write both cd's and dvd's are normally just called dvd burners.
I've never heard of a consumer dvd burner that couldn't also burn
cd's.

They normally use one 5.25" slot (1.6" high). Speeds vary.

These days, dvd burners are cheap enough that I don't see much point
to a combo drive.

I agree.

I've bought some DVD burners recently, and have been impressed with the
Samsung SH-182D.

LG, Lite-on, and Plextor are other brands that I can recommend.
