The following webpages should answer this for you. The first
link is for 40-conductor ATA cables, the next link is for 80-
conductor ATA cables:
http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/conf_CS.htm
http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/id...Cable80-c.html

Here is a quote from the 1st webpage:

"Assuming cable select is not being used, any connector on a
standard 40-conductor cable can go to any device, because all
40 wires are connected "straight through" to all three connectors."

This implies that if you do not use Cable Select, and instead
jumper the hard drives explicitly as Master or Slave, you could
even plug the center connector (gray) to the mother board,
and the hard drives to the two end connectors (black and blue).

Please post your results. :-)

40 conductor cables dont have different connector colors.

Only 80 connector cables do.

I just bought a 40 conductor cable at Fry's Electronics in San Marcos,
California. The cable I bought does have different connector colors.
And yes, it is indeed a 40 conductor cable. Honestly.
