- Samsung drives larger than 160GB?
- Posted by Ted on March 20th, 2005
Has anyone come across any information as to when Samsung are going to
release new models with a capacity larger than 160GB ?
- Posted by Digital Sheep on March 20th, 2005
Why. Buy Hitachi drives. Much faster and better reliabliity.

Anyone who wants quietness likes Samsungs.

Cool. Are you are quiet computer or do you like them for some other reason?

I've discovered that http://www.endpcnoise.com/ has Samsungs. I've e-mailed
them to see if they will check to see if they're shipping a nidec. (Samsungs
with nidec motors are quiet; those with jvc's aren't.)

I've had a few Samsungs in the past and never had a personal failure with
one. I also like the relative quietness, and lower running temps previous
models have demonstrated. I've had every brand at one time or another over
the years and also currently have a few of the most recent models from
Hitachi, WD, and Maxtor, but I keep an eye on Samsungs offerings if and when
they catch up and offer reasonable capacity for my current needs.
I'm looking to get 4 identical drives to build a Raid 5 array to serve my
video collection across a home network and absolute performance is not
paramount to my needs but cool and quiet is. FWIW, I suppose I trust what
I've had the least problems with.

What leads you to believe that Hitachi drives have "better reliability"?

I've never had a failure with one personally either, but I've also never had
a Pinto blow up under me--that doesn't mean that I want to drive one.

Sure, 25 % of warranty return the first year is a urban legend

I also have been waiting for larger Samsung drives. After having three WD
drives fail in a short period of time (and the last remaining one running is
noisy), my Samsung 160 gig has been a welcome relief. But, now I need more
space (and I want to replace the noisy WD 200 gig).

Because they are much quieter and more reliable than most.
No thanks.

I've got a pair of noisy WD800JBs that I'd like to replace with the new
Samsungs.

It's cold in here and my Samsung is at 10C, while my new WD that was on sale
is at 23C. The WD is very sensitive and if I put it in a pocket of still
air, it starts to scare me. At 39C and rising I had to move it. Now it runs
at 29C normally.

Yeah, I used to use WD before I changed to Samsung and would never go back
regardless of price. Drives are so cheap that its not worth the hassle
basically.
Only real downside with the Samsungs currently is that
you cant find bigger than 160GB on the shelves yet.
Just added another 160G and marvelled at the
silence as it was cloned from the previous 120G.

Yeah, me too. Mine is in the test system and its damned irritating when
I have to turn it on to use it. Think I'll wait till the 250G is buyable tho.
