WinPE for system recovery
Posted by Eric Gisin on December 31st, 2004

The subject is kind of vague. I used to use DOS for boot confguration, imaging
(ghost), diagnostics, and low-level partition management (ranish). Later most
of this could be done under NT4 on a small disk (ghost32, findpart, mbrwiz, GNU
dd, SCU).

I am now replacing my dead DDS drive with an external IDE drive (USB2 or 1394),
and supporting them under above systems is too much trouble. WinPE seems to be
the perfect solution.

I assume USB2 and 1394 will just work, right? Everything I ran on NT will run,
except SCU. There is also diskpart.

What are the options for backup? I have ghost32, which I found on a WinPE site.
Does ntbackup run? What else is there besides xcopy and robocopy?

Anything else do people put on their WinPE CDs (Bart's version)?
