- Best value PAL/UK MCE PVR card with RGB inputs?
- Posted by CJSnet on October 10th, 2005
Hi, as above really, any ideas in the UK at a good price?
I currently have the PVR-250 from Hauppauge but require RGB inputs to get
the best from my cable box (Telewest) which doesn't support S-Video.

There are no TV capture cards that support RGB input that are supported by MCE.
In fact there is only one consumer priced TV capture card that does support RGB
input http://www.pluggedin.tv/sweetspot/ but this is not supported by MCE not
least because it does not have a hardware MPEG2 encoder.
Your best option is to buy an RGB->s-video converter box. I use the one from
Maplins that costs just 30 pounds but have heard that the 79 pound one from JS
Technologies is even better. The difference in picture quality is well worth the
expense. It's much sharper with clearer colours.

Nigel,
I just received my RGB/S-video converter from JS Tech/UK today.
It will be really interesting to compare to my current composite feed...

Thanks Nigel, I have the Maplin one here and it's faulty and going back to
them, so I was hoping that rather than have all these extra doo-dahs and
wires, I could just get some sort of card that is compatible with the SCART
output of my Telewest box.

Let me know if it works with MCE. I have the WinTV PVR250 card, and tried
two JS Tech converters, neither of which worked properly, with MCE at least.

Works perfectly.
I made a grab of a standard test image when normal programming ends -
late at night s-video and composite comparison.
A "before" and "after" type thing. I was concerned that the difference
would be minuscule for all that money.
What type of problem did you run into?

Can I see your test image?
I had some sort of black & white image, or if it was colour occasionally it
would be fuzzy and liny. Really bad. I've ordered a replacement Maplin
converter and will wait and see...
