Poor image quality of video
Posted by Mark on February 16th, 2006

I have been using a DVB-T terrestrial card, recording TV to my PC and
watching back on my PC (with PowerDVD) or transferring to DVD, to watch on my
TV. The picture quality has been excellent, matching the quality of live TV
and Sky+ recording (as you would expect).

I decided to invest in a Media Centre PC and an Xbox 360 to be able to watch
and record programmes while missing out the DVD record step. However, I have
found that the quality is very poor - both on my PC and TV (through xbox360).
When I compare the image quality from MediaCentre (on my PC) with that of
PowerDVD for a recorded file, the image looks extremely soft, and a lot of
the picture detail is missing.

The situation with the Xbox360 into my TV seems even worse (even though I'm
using component input into a HDTV). Playing a recorded file looks all jerky
(on movement) and extremely soft compared to a recording from Sky+ say.
The TV is showing the input as 720p 60HZ. Is there any way to force the Xbox
to output at the correct resolution (576i or p) at 50Hz.

This is very annoying, as the image seems almost like VHS was, and a major
step back. Is anyone else having these problems and are there any solutions?

The only contribution I have is I suspect your HDTV is "Upscaling" the
incoming
signal - as my Samsung does, I know nothing of the X-Box.
This is the official X box site, including forums, worth a try:

For the "correct resolution" you require, does the the xbox have scart?
If so, connect via scart to your HDTV and disable unscaling?
Though I doubt this will be a very pleasing result?

Hi,

Ive just notice the same thing. The quality (MPEG video bitrate) with MCE is
really bad!!!!!! In how many Mbps does MCE record in?

I am very use to, and have a lot of knowledge regarding MPEG and TV/video
cards for PC. And the most common thing is that a ordinary software that is
made for the PC card records in 5-9 Mbps. Depending on how much the network
puts out. Most common is around 7-9Mbps.

I transformed the MCE recorded file type to a ordinary MPEG. But when i
analysed the videofile that I recorded with MCE... it was ONLY 1.4Mbps!

WHAT!? Why? Why so low?
Why doent MCE work as the ordinary tv-card caputure software does?
And why cant I deside myself the of quality of my recordings?

Would be nice with some answers. Thank you.

Kid regards
