Did you by any chance install any codec packs. It sounds like a bad codec
pack may have been installed, which is screwing up your avi and wmv
playback.

You might also want to try reinstalling your video card drivers.

Aside from that, you may want to try posting about your issue in the Media
Player newsgroups at microsoft.public.multimedia.windows.mediaplayer
