WMC library question. How to remove duplicates?
Posted by Malcolm H on January 25th, 2008

I am a new user of Windows Media Centre with Vista Home Premium and have
two questions concerning the music library.

1. My extensive mp3 music library is contained in a partition of its own
(Drive J but I also have some mp3 files located temporarily in another
partition (Drive E. Some of the files are duplicated in J: and E: When I
first started to use WMC it (by default) scanned all my drives looking for
media files and therefore found the duplicates. Subsequently I realised that
I did not wish E: to be scanned and therefore I removed it in the WMC
settings menu. However the duplicates still appear in the WMC library
display.

How do I remove the unwanted duplicates from the WMC display?

2. I note that a 'Delete' function in WMC allows music files easily to be
deleted from the library display but am concerned to discover that this
function also deletes the file completely. This seems to be very dangerous
and could easily result if precious files being deleted accidentally.

Is there any way to protect valuable music files from accidental deletion?
(I do, of couse, have a full backup of the music library but still believe
that it is too easy accidentally to delete files)

Thanks for any guidance
