If a 99 minute NTSC movie was converted to PAL, then converted back to
NTSC, how long would it end up being?

99 minutes.

PAL speedup only applies to the transfer of 24fps film to 25fps PAL
video. A 30fps NTSC source will have to be converted with a pulldown
scheme similar to the way film is transferred to NTSC, and the end
result winds up being the same running time. There is no pulldown scheme
in place for converting film to PAL video because the running speeds
were so similar it was deemed unnecessary (and too complicated).

Is that what they've done with the Lord of the Rings movies to make the DVD
versions longer?

Duh, 99 minutes....

If you don't frame rate convert both conversions, then it is 99 minutes, and
not jerky.

If you frame rate convert both conversions, then it is 99 minutes, and
jerky.

If you frame rate convert teh 1st & not the second, then it is 103 min
(assuming NTSC film), and jerky.

If you frame rate convert the 1st & not the second, then it is 82 minutes
(assuming NTSC-29.97), and jerky.

If you dont frame rate convert the 1st & do the second, then it is 94
minutes (assuming NTSC film), and jerky.

If you dont frame rate convert the 1st & do the second, then it is 118
minutes (assuming NTSC-29.97) and jerky.
