- Revisiting The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen...

Sat down with the DVD last night and for the life of me I can't
understand the hate heaped on this film. It has decent acting, a fun
plot, good looking characters and sets. All the complaints seem to be
"Wah! Venice doesn't have streets!" (funny, it doesn't have vampires
or invisible men either... it's a science FICTION story, not a
travelog!)
In terms of comic book to film adaptation it's not as good as, say,
X-Men 2. But it's a damn sight better than Daredevil or the Hulk.

I didn't think about it much, I just knew I couldn't wait for it to
end as I watched it. A good looking ride that went nowhere basically
summed it up for me. Saying it's better than Hulk or Daredevil isn't
saying much...

I think it's a fun story. However, they trashed the characters (Hyde is
EVIL!!) for no real good reason.

I really enjoy the original comic book arc this film is based on, but with all
the negative reviews I don't want to see the film

Terrible CGI, idiotic plot, half-baked story that goes nowhere, complete
inability to understand basic principles of film-making (ie continuity).
And that's just for starters.

Venice does have streets. It even has a MacDonalds, which is pretty

Not really. What's sad is that it's no longer a living city, as the
young all move out and the only real industry is tourists. Fast food
places away from the tourist sites would at least be a sign of actual
residents. Maybe they should just let the place sink...

The invisible man bits were brilliant, the only goofy looking bit was
the uber-Hyde beast at the end and even that's forgiveable compared to
the Absorbing Man bit at the end of the Hulk. The regular Hyde effects
were done with makeup and forced perspective, very little CGI and it
looked wonderful.
I find that people who say things like this have actually very little
understanding of the plot. The story makes perfect sense within the
bounds of the film and I don't really recall any continuity problems
(unlike, say, the Lord of the Rings films, which are good despite
having massive continuity problems.)

Yeah it just completely trashed the Hulk effects, and it probably cost half as
much. Overall I enjoyed the movie, but the Venice stuff was a bit sub-par.

CGI (particularly in the Venice scenes).
Umm, how about when Dorian Gray gets shot, has his shirt ripped open and
then in the next scene everything is intact. He's immortal, not his
clothes.

C'mon. The belltower there in St Mark's Square is a replica, the real
one having fallen down. The bars close early. There's virtually
nothing to do there. (I was there for a week, and was climbing the

Those are the same clothes he's wearing in the painting. He's
restored, so are the clothes. Or didn't you wonder why his fashion was
100 years out of date?
