- Spots on screen
- Posted by Beowulfie on October 29th, 2006
Today I noticed two large spots, one bluish and one greenish, on the
screen when I started to watch a new dvd. I turned to the regular
channels on the tv and they weren't there. When I switched back over to
the tv they were back, after abit they were gone, but then little later
they came back. I stopped watching the dvd and put in another set I'd
been watching yesterday and there weren't any spots, but when the dvd
was almost done the spots had returned. When I turned off the dvd player
but left it on the aux channel the spots were there but slowly faded away.
I've never noticed this before. I have a Sanyo 24" flat screen that I
just bought last month and a Toshiba dvd player that I've had for
awhile. The player is also showing error everyone once in awhile when I
put a disc in, but if I take it out and put it in again it will be ok.
I've already planned to replace it next year when I get my tax return.
Does this sound like something being caused by the player?
Thanks.

Acid. I see all kinds of fun colors when I do it.
All kidding aside, sounds almost like magnetic interference of some kind. I
am assuming you mean a "flat screen" CRT and not a thin screen, like plasma
or LCD.
Naw, I only done acide one time back in my youth and did not like it. Good
old fashioned pot and alcohol was all I ever did. The alcohol is still here.
Anyone have a liver I could borrow?

Yeah, the former, can't afford a plasma. It only happens when I play the
dvd player and it comes and goes.
I'm assuming it is somehow a sign the player is going out and I'm going
to try a different machine on the tv. I'm also wondering if it could be
the connection and if I change the connection to the front input it
might go away. Very weird

It might be a sound/speaker issue: most likely you DVD-movie will
create more volume trough the speakers meaning more magnetic radiation
that causes the color deformations on your screen.

on this new tv before this weekend. Any suggestions on how to rectify this?

It sounds like a heat related problem, causing the shadowmask in the
tube to warp slightly and allowing the green phosphor pixels to "see"
a bit of the red and blue electron guns and vice-versa.
Quite often this is because the TV is set by default with its contrast
flat-out. This causes a very bright image, but produces more heat and
thus more potential for warping. It will also mean that the beam will
be less focussed and produce a softer picture and a shorter tube life.
Try turning down the contrast to something sensible (like halfway) and
see how you get on.

That's rubbish. The amount of volume from a speaker has nothing to do
with how much magnetic interference it creates. The magnetism of the
voice coil is an infinitesimal fraction of the Gauss level of the
permanent magnet.
That being said the spots DO sound like impurity caused by a nearby
speaker. Most speakers now are shielded and do not have an external
magnetic field, but if yours is an older one just move it away from
the screen.
Also as suggested the orientation of the set to magnetic North can
upset purity. Try degaussing the set with a degaussing coil. A tape
bulk eraser moved around the front of the screen will "sort of" do,
though it's not as good.
