- Which television set?
- Posted by Martin Nadeau on October 28th, 2003
Hi,
This is a message that I posted on the HTF board, but I thought I'd
also post it here in case someone has an opinion.
My father just bought himself a new HDTV and is offering to give me his
old 35" RCA set (model F35750ST), which I believe he bought around
1995.
I currently have an older 27" Sony set, model KV-27HFR, which I believe
dates from around 1987-88.
Now, I'm wondering if I should really replace the old Sony by the RCA.
Logically, I guess I should go for the more recent RCA set which has
S-Video input (the Sony only has RCA jacks), and probably a higher
resolution. However, a tech where I brought the Sony for a minor repair
told me something along the lines that "they don't make 'em as good
anymore" and that the components were very good quality and still in
great shape. I admit that I do like the picture on this set.
I haven't watched my father's set many times, and so I can't really
compare. All I remember is that it has rather bad sound. Also, a real
comparison would be difficult because my Sony set has been properly
calibrated by a tech and my father's set has not and is not really in
an ideal viewing location.
Anyway, does anyone know both models and could advise me? I'd certainly
appreciate any opinions before going through the hassle of moving the
RCA set to my place (should I decide to replace the Sony).
Thanks!

Bigger would always be better when it comes to watching widescreen DVDs.
Make sure you tune which ever set you pick with the THX Optimizer on
any of the THX dvds you have including the new Indiana Jones set (make
sure to get the widescreen one!).
Good luck!

If it works without problems, why not?
Depends.
The RCA has a bigger screen size and has the benefit of an s-video input. Your
Sony uses what I believe to be a more advanced picture tube (LSAGIC cathode
aperture grille Trinitron as opposed to a traditional cathode INVAR shadow
mask), although it is older.
Generally, RCA sets are not as good of quality as Sony. But, around the time
frame you've mentioned, the RCA your father has may actually be of decent
design although this depends on the chassis model (not TV model) itself, which
is usually identified with a CTC-prefixed number inside the set, usually
labeled on the mainboard chassis itself.
In this case, I'd say go ahead and get the RCA if you've got the room and are
able to get it calibrated. You may also want to go ahead and get a set of
decent s-video cables so you can use your DVD player through this kind of
connection well.
But, keep your Sony. It may come in handy later in case you need it. -

I've had my father check out the chassis number and it is CTC-169BG5.
Would that happen to tell you if it was indeed a decent design?
Yes, you're absolutely right, I won't be throwing away the Sony.
Actually, I might keep it as a tv set for the bedroom if I decide to
use the RCA as the main home theater set in the living room.
Many thanks for your reply.
