Is there such a thing as a universal remote that can access the
player-specific setup menus on DVD players?

If it's an IR command, a Harmony remote can do it. It can learn any IR
button.

OK, but what if we also pretend for the sake of argument that the
original
DVD player remote does not exist? :-)

A PDA with IR port is a good programmable remote. Some players, like my
Pioneer, need a special remote hack that is only possible using a PDA and a
string of commands. Is that the kind of thing you mean?
