- Volume Compensation
- Posted by Jason Stone on January 20th, 2004
Hello everybody,
I apologize for being the proverbial 'newbie' in these parts, but I have a
really dumb question that I can't seem to figure out the answer to. When
watching certain DVDs on my 5.1 setup, the volume will automatically adjust
itself to a 'normal' level. IE: When lots of loud action comes along, the
volume will decrease, and then increase when the action quiets down. I'm
relatively sure that the opposite happens (soft spots become louder). I
don't think the problem is present on all DVDs (or at least as noticeable).
My question is, where does the problem originate from, and how do I go about
changing settings or solving the problem? A list of my Sony setup follows:
Receiver: STR-K850P
DVD: DVP-NC665P
The audio is run from the DVD to the receiver via the digital audio port.
If this isn't the right forum, please direct me to a more appropriate one.
Thanks for the assistance!

From the sound of it, it seems that you might have inadvertantly turned
on the "dynamic compression" mode some DVD players have. This is
sometimes called "midnight mode". It's purpose is to make it easier to
watch films with lower volumes (like at night) since the frequency
response on DVD's is so broad that if you must turn up the volumes for
the softer parts (whispering and such)only to have things too loud at
other times (for the time of the night).
Best,
Mike

This feature is also available on many receivers, so you'll
want to check both the DVD player and your receiver.
