- Anti-spam software and email virus
- Posted by perrin on April 14th, 2005
Hi all. I wonder if anti-spam software that auto-read and delete spam emails
will render the user vulnerable to virus and trojans attached to some of the
spam emails? I know some software have an anti-virus feature but they are
not dedicated antivirus software.
I am using Qurb anti-spam and F-Prot antivirus.
Any comments? TIA.

Thunderbirds junkmail controls enough for me.

before checking you could be vulnerable. What mail client are you
using,Outlook Express? You should switch to a more secure one like
Thunderbird.

The filtering software should be treating the e-mail as textual data
only - so no execution of content is likely. Of course the usual caveat
applies - if the filtering software is flawed even textual data can
become executable code via buffer overflow exploit.
Even dedicated anti-virus software can have flaws.

Just keep yourself informed of any issues concerning any software you
run on your machine. Imagine having a full featured dedicated firewall
device, a personal firewall and IDS application w/all bells|whistles, a
mail proxy w/spam and malware filtering capabilities, and still getting
bitten by an ARJ compressed exploit trojan aimed at your AV's inability
to correctly handle LFN's because of a library file it (and others) use.
The more software you run, the harder this will be to do (and the more
necessary it will be).

Yes I'm using OE. Will I be able to import my emails into Thunderbird?
Thanks.

When you install Thunderbird, you will be asked if you want to import
all OE account settings and mail.
Probably newsgroup settings as well.
Once you set up Thunderbird for Usenet, note that the default position
of the cursor (on a reply) is at the bottom of the quoted material.
Please don't top-post then. Thanks.

(top-posted for consistency)
You should, unless they're hotmail accounts.

better idea - to get hotmail in thunderbird, use the webmail

Here I go, first ng post with Thunderbird. Thanks to those who helped.
Just a query: the junkmail component in TB has to be trained right? How
effective have you guys found it? TIA.

e-mail addie in Usenet isn't gonna help you get rid of it (hint, munge
e-mail), but what little I do get the junk mail controls pick right up
on, and very rarely do I get mail mismarked as junk.

How do you enter in "localhost" under server type? The wizard doesn't

have you checked the status of the extension
(tools->extensions->webmail->options)? are you creating a normal email
account or a webmail account (despite the fact that it's meant for
accessing webmail, i use the normal email account option)? are you using
the latest version of thunderbird (1.0.2, i've never tried it with an
earlier version)?

Perhaps you've deleted your hosts file, or don't have the localhost line

Try using 127.0.0.1, instead of localhost.
