- Best Antivirus Software
- Posted by thomas2701@gmail.com on February 21st, 2008
I am looking for opinions (dare I say consensus?) on the best
antivirus
software, hopefully with good antitrojan performance as well.
I don't have to get a free product. I am willing to pay a reasonable
cost
(~$50 or so) for a good software that won't de-stabilize my systems
(Win2000
Pro and Win XP Home).
My needs are typical of a home user: Good on access and on-demand
scanning,
e-mail, download scanning, frequent updates for signature files etc.
etc.
I have used Dr. Solomon (and now McAfee) and Norton AV, F-Prot in the
past.
I haven't been keeping up with this software genre lately.
So which is the best one thesedays?

From my experience, the best antivirus software out there is
Kaspersky. After our computers were torn apart by a trojan that let
or sorts of malicious software in, our computers were completely
useless and crashed almost as soon as you started up. We tried all
the brand named antivirus software out there, but none could compare
to Kaspersky which cleaned up at least 90% of the malicious software.
The others could only clean up about 50% of it.
You do have to pay for it, but they update their signatures and
definitions every hour. So unless something can attack your computer
in less than a hour from being put out there, you'll be well protected.

Did that include 'Avast'?
IMHO it's the best, right up there with Kaspersky.

No Harry - it isn't up there with Kaspersky.

Dave,
can you point out the advantages of Kaspersky over Avast for me, please?
Maybe it's time for me to 'upgrade'? <g>.

A few points...
Higher catch rate
Greater archival/installer extraction capabilities
Fast turn-around from sample to signature
fast fix turn-around for false positive
Personally, in the Free class, I prefer AntiVir.

Only, I'll have to upgrade to Win2000, XP or Vista first, because it isn't
WinME compatible. Will keep it in mind.
