Norton AV 2005 version. I HAVE NEVER FOUND A VIRUS ?? WHY?
Posted by Pedro Sanchez on May 24th, 2006

Norton AV 2005, I've used this thing for a LOOOOOONG time and have all
the current definitions. The thing has ***NEVER*** found a
trojan/worm/virus.

I think that's got to be impossible because I do some pretty dangerous
things downloadwise.

So, is there a AV program I could use WITH Norton AV[or without] that
would detect a larger number of viruses?

I would need one that has definition updates of course.
thanks,
pedro

Well, NAV's detection rates aren't at all bad. You should be running
scans for spyware and adware as well. I suggest Spybot and AdAware.
Then to see if NAV is missing malware on your machine, download
the KAVDOSNT util from my web site and let it scan your drive(s).
It may well find stuff NAV has missed.

Never? Nothing wrong with that. Perhaps nobody ever sent you a virus.
You didn't say if you've tested it.

To do that, copy the following one-line into a text file and save it
somewhere. Name it "eicar.txt" or similar. Don't put any carriage
returns at the end of the line. Then scan it.

I went to Art's website, and clicked on the file KAVDOSNT and speaking of
Norton *never* reacting, it sure did this time. As soon as I went to
download the file KAVDOSNT Norton popped and said it was
"trojan.galapoper.A"!!
--And I had planned to run that file!!
Seriously I trust Art and wonder if this is a false positive??

no virus found
But Norton on *my machine* comes up with this trojan.galaper.A when
attempting to download it. So I turned off my auto protect and then down
loaded it.
I then sent it to VirusTotal and my results were Fortinet "suspicious" and
Panda "suspicious file"
All the rest "no virus found" including Symantec (Norton)

I ran Housecall but it did not find any suspicious files even though I have
KAVDOSNT sitting on my desk top.
Then I scanned KAVDOSNT with Norton and it came up clean. Then I put on
autoprotect and tried to download it again. Same thing. So I pressed OK on
the Norton pop and then proceded to download the file. The file
successfully downloaded and it was scanned clean by Norton.

So my question is what is causing the trojan alert and why do Panda and
Fortinet call it suspicious?

That's odd since I had just done the same and those two reported "no
virus found" just like all the rest.

Yep.

You may have different scan settings for realtime than on-demand.
Try setting them equal and see what happens. Other than that shot
in the dark, I dunno.

I have no idea. Submit the file to them for analysis if you're curious
enough. Personally, I'm not

And if you're that curious, you can extract the files from
KAVDOSNT.exe to try to find out which file "inside" is causing
the alert. If you're scared to run my self extracting file (SFX)
you can use certain decompressors to extract them. Many
popular "unzippers" will extract the contents just as if it's
..ZIP file (which it is but with a self-extractor wrapped "on top".

In fact, now you are getting me slightly curious. Let me know
which file NAV alerts on. It may not be one of "my" files at
all It may be one of the freeware utils I have bundled in
there. That would be even more hilarious

NAV does not alert on the KAVDOSNT.exe at all. *Only* when I attempt to
download it with autoprotect on will it alert.
I did extract the files, found your personal email address and will attempt
to send the file through email and see if it gets by scanners.

It may not be one of "my" files at
