- Update folder location for new AVG free 7?
- Posted by fitwell on January 28th, 2005
Since yesterday the automatic updater isn't able to connect. I don't
know what the problem is, and I'll try fix that over the weekend; in
the meantime, however, was hoping to manually update AVG free 7
myself, as I used to do for v6. However, in the install folder, no
longer see a file called "updates", or whatever. Anyone know where
the updates are now put for AVG 7?
Thanks.

For all I know, fitwell, you have to create an update folder before you can
receive updates from AVG.
I just went through the entire 'exercise'.

Like, d'uh <g>, it didn't occur to me till later to do a search on
*.bin files. Sometimes one needs a good night's sleep to get good

I found the folder. It's no longer a folder called something like
"update" in the folder where AVG is installed. I found the folder in
the (where else <sigh><g>!), Application Data one. In my Win98SE, the
folder is called:
C:\WINDOWS\All Users\Application Data\Grisoft\Avg7Data\upd7bin
The automatic updater seems to be working now. I'm wondering if the
website wasn't having troubles over the 2 day period when I couldn't
connect. Everything else but that was working just fine, so it might
just have been too much traffic, even.
Anyway, it updated fine, finally.
But knowing where the update folder is and dl the bin files myself
would be good to know how to do even though the AVG message box says
that manually dl is not recommended. However, up until only a short
while back, I _only_ did manual updates. I preferred this to web
installs, but since I know have to much of this to do along with all
the other tasks I must do on this computer to keep it current, I broke
down and started automatic dl.
We'll see if the manual way works <g>.
Cheers!

Hi fitwell:
I wasn't talking about manual update, just choosing the update folder. But
if you got things sorted out, you can change settings to automatic update
anytime.
As for the connection problem, it probably was too busy
for AVG to connect and I had problems myself earlier today. A little while
ago I received notice that no update for me was available and to check again
later.
As long as things work out allright in the end.
Happy surfing.
Harry.
