Cannot delete file: There has been a sharing violation
Posted by Erik on February 25th, 2004

Hello,

What should I do in order to delete a file when I get the message:

"Cannot delete file: There has been a sharing violation. The source or
destination file may be in use."

Any help?

Thanks,

Erik

Press F8 during the boot phase to get into Safe Mode,
then delete the file.

The file is on a server (IIS). Any way to do it without rebooting?

Thanks,

Erik

You can try and identify the locking agent with one of these:

nthandle.exe from SysInternals
oh.exe (Win2000 Resource Kit)
compmgmt.msc"-Shared Folders-Open Files
