- Cross Over Network connection

Environment- 2 Stand alone PCs with LAN card as follows:
Desktop1- Windows 2000 Professional with SP4
Laptop1- Windows XP Professional SP1, already joined to an existing Domain
which cannot be updated.
I tried the following
On Desktop 1- set LAN IP to 10.12.1.1
set subnet mask to 255.255.255.0
On Laptop 1- set *Alternative* LAN IP to 10.12.1.2
set subnet mask to 255.255.255.0
After the above, on reboot, neither machine could ping each other
If in addition I set the default gateway on each PC to the IP address of the
other PC, also doesn't help!
Note- XP laptop is joined to a domain, Desktop1 belongs to a workgroup
called workgroup. Could this explain why I can't even ping? I just want to
be able to basically do a file share. That's all.

Unfortunately, I was pinging by IP address :-(

What is the IP address of the fefault router each of these PC's are supposed
to be running? It had better be in the range of 10.12.1.x for the subnet
mask you are using.

Help:
What matters is what the ipconfig /all cmd shows.
If it agrees with the above info, then are the NIC lights on? Try two
straight through cables and a hub?
Does either ws have a firewall? If so what do the logs say? Disable them?
